PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Loyola Marymount Lions scored twice in the first half and overcame a goal from Portland's Derek Boggs in the second half to hold on for a 2-1 win over the Pilots in a West Coast Conference men's soccer game played on Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field. The game was physical as LMU lost two players to red cards, allowing Portland to play with a two-man advantage during the final 28 minutes.
Â
But the Lions would ultimately prevail, improving to 6-3-2 on the season and to 2-1-1 in the WCC. Portland, which defeated San Diego 2-1 at Merlo on Friday night, drops to 7-5-0 overall and to 2-2-0 in the conference.
Â
Momentum swung in Portland's favor after LMU's Leon Prikhodovskiy was shown a straight card with the Lions leading 2-0 in the 62nd minute. This came after Sean Sears was shown his second yellow of the match only a few minutes earlier.
Â
The Pilots immediately went on the attack looking to take advantage, and Boggs got a goal back when he headed in a shot off a corner kick from Hugo Rhoads in the 75th minute. The goal is Boggs' first of the fall and it pulled the Pilots within 2-1.
Â
But LMU did well to limit Portland's chances from there and the Lions would hold on for the victory.
Â
LMU out-shot the Pilots 16-9, but the Pilots claimed a 6-3 advantage in the second half. Lions' goalkeeper Paul Blanchette, who was given a 2-0 lead in the first half, made three saves.
Â
John McFarlin scored the game's first goal when he re-directed a nice cross from the left wing inside the right post. It was Adrian Perez who sent the cross in and it's McFarlin's second goal of the season.
Â
LMU then made it a 2-0 game in the 36th minute when Akio Ohtake-Gordon found the back of the net from about 20 yards out. The ball fell to the feet of Ohtake-Gordon and he finished inside the left post for his first goal this fall.
Â
The Pilots next hit the road for a pair of WCC games this week. First Portland will be in Spokane, Wash., on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. game against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Pilots then travel to Santa Clara for a game next Sunday.
