MORAGA, Calif. --- Portland freshman Eddie Sanchez scored his conference-leading seventh goal of the season, but the Saint Mary's Gaels would prevail over the Pilots 3-2 in overtime in a West Coast Conference men's soccer game played on Sunday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium. The Pilots (6-4-0, 1-1-0 WCC) earn a split on the weekend after defeating San Francisco 3-2 on The Hilltop on Friday night.
Â
The Pilots grabbed the lead early against the Gaels after Dustin Munger notched his second goal of the season in the 19th minute. Aaron Caprio took the initial shot, which was saved by Saint Mary's goalkeeper Andrew Rawls. Munger was there to tap in the rebound and give the Pilots a 1-0 lead.
Â
But the Gaels responded with a pair of goals to jump ahead 2-1. The first goal came off the foot of Alex Braman, which evened the score at 1-1 in the 32nd minute. On a nice ball sent in by Will Kendall on a free kick, Braman was able to get a touch on it near the left post, finding the back of the net.
Â
The game would remain tied until Justin Howard finished off a rebound in the 63rd minute to hand Saint Mary's the one-goal advantage.
Â
Now trailing, the Pilots turned to Sanchez, who would deliver. In the 70th minute, Sanchez buried a shot inside the right post from about 15 yards out. Caprio fed Sanchez with a pass for his second assist of the afternoon.
Â
Regulation would end with the game tied 2-2 and the Pilots playing a man-down after Derek Boggs was shown his second yellow card of the match.
Â
The Gaels quickly went to work in the extra time, and Ismail tallied the winner not even a minute in. The goal is his second this season.
