THIS WEEK
• The Pilots return home this weekend to host Air Force and Seattle at Merlo Field; the Falcons first visit for a 4:30 p.m. game on Friday before the Redhawks come to The Bluff on Sunday for a 12:00 p.m. match.
• Both games are part of a UP soccer doubleheader and will be followed by the women's team against Nevada on Friday and Missouri on Sunday.
• Portland will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the men's trip to the 1988 College Cup, the first final four in UP program history, men's or women's.
• Members from that team will be on hand Sunday for a half-time ceremony, which will include legendary goalkeeper Kasey Keller.
ABOUT THE PILOTS...
• The Pilots open the 2013 season by playing seven of eight non-conference games at home.
• The Pilots dropped their lone non-conference road game of the season last weekend at Washington; the Huskies scored twice in the first half two and added two more goals after the break en route to the 4-1 win.
• Freshman Eddie Sanchez scored his first career goal against the Huskies, which was assisted by fellow freshman Aaron Caprio.
• Four different Pilots (Iwasaki, Liberator, Corbett, Sanchez) have scored all four of Portland's goals so far this season, while four different Pilots (Corbett, Velasco, Rhoads, Caprio) have registered an assist.
• Junior Derek Boggs was named to the West Coast Conference Preseason All-Conference Team, while the Pilots were picked sixth in a tight vote by the league's head coaches.
• Five different teams received a first place vote and just 13 points separate first-place choice Santa Clara and the Pilots.
• Portland features a bevy of newcomers as 10 players total are in their first season with the Pilots.
• Portland has been to two College Cups (1988 & 1995) and has reached the NCAA Postseason 14 times.
• The Pilots are looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2009; redshirt-senior goalkeeper Justin Baarts is the lone remaining player from that team.
• Head coach and Director of Soccer Bill Irwin is in his 11th year at the helm of the UP men's soccer program and he is just six wins shy of career win No. 100; Irwin is in his 27th year overall on the Portland staff.
• Assistant coach Rob Baarts is back for his 11th year on the Portland bench, while assistant coach Brandon McNeil is in his sixth year on the staff.
CELEBRATING THE '88 COLLEGE CUP
• This weekend the Pilots will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the men's trip to the 1988 College Cup, which was the first Final Four visit in UP program history.
• That team, which was coached by Clive Charles and featured Kasey Keller, Rob Baarts and Garrett Smith, went through the regular season undefeated before succumbing to eventual national champion and College Cup host Indiana 1-0 in the semi's.
• Members from the '88 squad will be on hand on Sunday for a half-time celebration during the men's game against Seattle.
AND THEN SOME
• In addition to the 25th Anniversary celebration of the 1988 College Cup, the Pilots will be featuring a handful of other promotions this weekend.
• Friday night is Military Appreciation night presented by Oregon Army National Guard with a special color guard and National Anthem by UP's Army ROTC.
• Sunday is Youth Soccer Day presented by Oregon College Savings, meaning all youth soccer players will receive a discounted $4 GA ticket.
• Sunday is also soccer camp reunion day allowing all UP campers who are wearing their camp t-shirt to get in for free.
• Sunday is capped off by a postgame autograph zone with the team
IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR
• The Baarts trio is back for their final season on the same bench.
• Assistant coach Rob Baarts' son Tyler is in his senior year as a defender with the Pilots, while Rob's nephew and Tyler's cousin Justin is a redshirt-senior goalkeeper.
• New to the Portland roster this year are freshmen twin brothers Conor and Rory Johnston, who come to The Bluff from Sonoma, Calif.
• Conor is a defender, while Rory plays in the midfield.
PILOTS IN THE MLS
• Four Portland men's soccer alums are currently on active rosters in the MLS, including Steven Evans here with the Portland Timbers.
• Both Luis Robles, a goalkeeper, and Heath Pearce, a defender, play for the New York Red Bulls, while Collen Warner plays for the Montreal Impact.
• Logan Emory was recently released by Toronto FC.
• Additionally, former UP defender Steve Cherundolo recently played in his club record 300th game with Hannover 96 of Germany's Bundesliga, and he has 84 career caps with the U.S. Men's National Team.
