Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. --- The match featured 27 combined shots, including 10 on goal, but Portland and Loyola Marymount played to as scoreless draw in West Coast Conference men's soccer action Friday night at Merlo Field and the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.
Portland freshman goalkeeper Paul Christensen picked up his fourth shutout of the season, recording six saves between the pipes for the Pilots (4-7-4, 0-2-1 WCC). LMU goalie Vince Paldino stopped four shots for the Lions (7-4-4, 1-1-1 WCC).
The Pilots racked up 15 shots, including 10 in the second period, while LMU finished with 12 shots on the night. The attacking soccer also led to 14 corner kicks for the Lions and 10 for the Pilots.
The best chances in the first half for both sides came early as Portland's Brandon Zambrano and Hugo Rhoads both had quality chances went wide and then Eddie Sanchez put a shot on frame in the 12th minute that was saved by Paldino. LMU answered a minute later and tested Christensen off the foot of Dylan Seedman.
Sanchez appeared to put the Pilots ahead in the 43rd minute, but the goal was denied when he was whistled for a foul just prior to his attempt.
Portland picked up the pressure in the second half as freshman Erik Edwardson was set up in a 1-v-1 with Paldino in the 51st minute after a nice pass from Sanchez. His effort missed wide right by inches. Edwardson drilled another quality effort slightly wide in the 67th minute as Portland continued to push forward.
Thomas Peterson set Edwardson up in the 77
th minute, but Paldino was up to the task once again. Portland had three more quality attempts in the final 10 minutes, but overtime was in the cards.
Extra time featured lots of open play, but few quality scoring chances as Christensen and Paldino made a save each over 20 minutes before the game ended in a draw.
Portland will continue WCC play this Sunday against the San Diego Toreros. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Merlo Field.
