Box Score I
Box Score (pdf)SPOKANE, Wash. --- Portland freshman Brandon Zambrano gave the Pilots an early lead, but the Gonzaga Bulldogs would battle back to claim a 2-1 win in overtime in the West Coast Conference season finale at Luger Field on a chilly Saturday afternoon.
Portland's (4-11-4, 0-6-1 WCC) goal came in the ninth minute when sophomore Eddie Sanchez sent a great diagonal ball in the direction of Zambrano, just inside the 18-yard box in the ninth minute. Zambrano took a touch before hitting a shot past Gonzaga goalkeeper Keane Ellis and into the left corner of the net. It's the fourth goal this season for Zambrano, and Sanchez records his third assist.
In the 21st minute, Portland freshman goalkeeper Paul Christensen made a stellar save to keep the score 1-0. On a nice build up by the Bulldogs, Lars Ludwigs tried to finish with a first-time touch from the center of the box, but Christensen knocked away the shot from point-blank range.
Zambrano then nearly registered the first-half brace in the 39th minute when he gained possession inside the box, made a move to the right to avoid a defender and cracked a shot. But this time Ellis was able to make the save sending both teams to the locker room with the Pilots leading 1-0 at the half.
Nine minutes into the second half Gonzaga (5-12-1, 3-3-1 WCC) tallied the equalizer courtesy a goal from Clark Phillips. On a cross sent in from the right, Zach Hamer somehow got a touch on the ball, sending it in the direction of Phillips, who buried a shot into the top left corner of the net.
Portland would pretty much dominate possession following the GU goal, and Erik Edwardson dragged a shot wide in the 72nd minute before having a header saved in the 84th minute as the score would remain 1-1.
The two sides would then head to overtime where the Bulldogs capitalized with the game-winner only 28 seconds in. Graison Le sent a ball into the area and Ludwigs put away a header inside the left post to hand the Bulldogs the win.
Christensen finished with a pair of saves on the day, while Gonzaga's halftime replacement in goal Chris Lowrimore kept the Pilots out of the net with three second-half saves. Seven of Portland's 12 shots were on-goal and the Pilots held the Bulldogs to just eight shots total and only three on-target.
