THIS WEEK The Portland Pilots head south for a two-game trip in Southern California this weekend.
On Friday, the Pilots will be in Northridge, Calif., for a match-up with the CSUN Matadors at 7 p.m. at the Matadome.
Portland will then head to San Luis Obispo for a game on Sunday against the Cal Poly Mustangs at 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK The Pilots opened the season by traveling to Corvallis, Ore., last Friday where the No. 21 Oregon State Beavers claimed an 87-65 win.
The Beavers jumped out to an early lead, but the Pilots would play the 21st-ranked team in the country even the rest of the way.
Senior Cassandra Brown had 18 points and eight rebounds, senior Kari Luttinen added 12 points and freshman Sara Zaragoza had a solid collegiate debut, finishing with 10 points.
ABOUT THE PILOTS Head coach Cheryl Sorenson is in her first year at the helm of the UP women's basketball program; Sorenson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Pilots before replacing long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years on The Bluff.
Senior guard Jasmine Wooton was named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Team and the Pilots were tabbed to finish seventh in the preseason coaches' poll.
Wooton landed All-WCC Honorable Mention as a junior, averaging 13.1 points and 4.3 assists; last season Wooton exploded for a career-high 36 points during a 73-65 win at Pacific on Dec. 28; it's the most points scored by a Pilot since Martha Sheldon also scored 36 in 1991.
Wooton is one of four returning starters for the Pilots, who return eight letterwinners overall.
Wooton (807 points), Kari Luttinen (953 points) and Cassandra Brown (881 points) are all quickly approaching the 1,000-career point plateau.
Brown also earned All-WCC Honorable Mention last year and is Portland's top returning scorer (14.1 ppg).
Last season's 72-51 win over No. 24 San Diego on Jan. 8 was Portland's first win over a ranked opponent since Dec. 6, 2003, when the Pilots topped No. 20 Oregon 76-58 at the Chiles Center; UP also defeated Washington for the first time ever last winter.
A BRAND NEW ERA Cheryl Sorenson, a Portland native who has spent the past three years on The Bluff as an assistant coach, was named head coach of the University of Portland women's basketball program in April.
Sorenson replaced long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years at the helm of the Pilots.
Sorenson is the fifth head coach in the program's 37-year history; she attended Clackamas High School and played collegiately at the University of Washington.
Sorenson replaced coach Sollars, who compiled nearly 400 wins with the Pilots and won 565 games overall as a collegiate head coach; Sollars was a five-time WCC Coach of the Year and he led the Pilots to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments during the mid-1990's.
1,000x3 Kari Luttinen (953), Cassandra Brown (881) and Jasmine Wooton (807) are all poised to join Portland's 1,000-point career scorer list.
Portland has never had three players score their 1,000th career point in the same season in the 37 years of the program's existence.
Two players have scored career point No. 1,000 in the same season a handful of times, most recently during the 2011-12 season when Natalie Day and ReZina TecleMariam accomplished the feat.
Luttinen is averaging 10.6 points in 90 career games and she currently ranks 10th all-time on the Portland charts with 108 career three-pointers
Brown is sixth all-time at UP in three-point percentage (.368), eighth in free throw percentage (.768) and is ninth with 109 career three's.
Wooton ranks fifth in free throw percentage (.777).
