PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Washington Huskies overcame a career-high 14 rebounds by Portland's Cassandra Thompson and 17 points from Cassandra Brown to defeat the Pilots 80-45 in a non-conference women's basketball game at the Chiles Center on Sunday afternoon. UW is the third straight opponent from the Pac-12 Conference for the Pilots, who drop to 1-6 on the year.
Â
The Huskies, who received a vote in the most recent coaches' and AP polls, improved to 7-1.
Â
The Huskies shot a blistering 59.3 percent in the first half, but Portland's three-point shooting allowed the Pilots to hang around. After falling behind early, Thompson drilled a three from the top of the key that tied the score 7-7.
Â
Brown then got going from deep and a pair of angle three's from the senior pulled the Pilots within 20-14 with 9:34 left in the first half. Portland connected on five first-half three-pointers out of nine tries, but the hot-shooting Huskies entered the locker room leading 46-28.
Â
UW cooled off a bit after the break, shooting just 33.3 percent, as the Pilots were within reach for much of the second half. But a late 15-1 run put the game away for the Huskies.
Â
Brown finished a perfect 3-for-3 from deep to lead the Pilots in scoring for the fifth time this season. Senior Kari Luttinen also scored in double figures with 11 points and senior point guard Jasmine Wooton returned from an injury to score seven points.
Â
Five of Thompson's boards came on the offensive end of the floor. The 14 rebounds by the senior match her previous career-high, which came at Idaho in 2013.
Â
The Pilots were hurt by turnovers as the Huskies claimed a 20-2 advantage in points off of turnovers. Washington also held a slight 39-38 edge on the glass.
Â
Washington was led offensively by Kelsey Plum, who entered the game as the nation's No. 2 scorer. Plum overcame a slow start to finish with a game-high 20 points. UW had four players score in double figures and Aminah Williams grabbed a team-best 10 boards.
Â
Portland finished 6-for-12 from behind the three-point arc, went 7-for-11 at the free throw line and shot just 30.2 percent (16-for-53) overall. Washington combined to shoot 44.4 percent (28-for-63), hit eight three's out of 26 attempts and was 16-for-20 from the foul line.
Â
The Pilots remain at home next week to host two teams from the Big Sky Conference at the Chiles Center. First up is a visit from cross town rival Portland State on Friday night at 7 p.m. Montana then comes to The Bluff for a 2 p.m. game on Sunday.
