FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- The Portland Pilots extended their streak to 23 years for sending an athlete to the NCAA Championship meet. Tansey Lystad qualified for Nationals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while running a time of 10:11.57. She was the 11
th qualifier in the group of 12 that advance to the next round.
Â
"Tansey ran a great race. She ran with confidence and put herself in the mix right away," said head women's coach Ian Solof. "She fought hard the whole way and her toughness paid off."
This will be Lystad's first trip to the NCAA Championship meet and it will cap off her most successful season as a Pilot.
Â
Thursday evening saw five men compete in the men's 10,000-meter and three women in the women's 10,000-meter. While no one was successful in their attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championship, there was a gutsy performance by Merel van Steenbergen in her final race in purple.
Â
Van Steenbergen finished 16
th in the race, only four places from the coveted 12
th position.
Â
"Merel ran a great 10,000 to finish off her college career," said Solof. "She moved up well the whole race and missed a trip to Nationals by only four places."
Â
Today in the women's 5,000-meter, Lystad will once again compete and will be accompanied by Anne Luijten in the second heat of the race.
Â
In the men's 5,000-meter, Charlie McDonald will look to extend his senior season a little bit longer and punch a ticket to the NCAA Championships.
