Box Score I
Box Score (pdf)BEAVERTON, Ore. --- The Siena Saints scored in the 107th minute to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Portland Pilots Sunday afternoon at Ronaldo Field at the Nike World Headquarters. The Pilots played a man-down after receiving a red card in the 83rd minute. Freshman goalkeeper Paul Christensen recorded nine saves in the game for Portland (1-2-3), while senior Michael Escobar scored the lone Pilot goal.
Portland out-shot Siena (5-1-0) in the first half, but it would be the Saints that tallied a goal late in the period to give them the one goal advantage heading into the half.
The Pilots had nine shots during the first 45 minutes with four of them on-goal compared to the Saints six total shots and three on frame.
The best chance for Portland came in the 34th minute when senior Steven Corbett flicked the ball over a Siena defender to freshman Erik Edwardson, who placed the ball just inside of the lower right post. The goal, however, was called back as Edwardson was called offside.
In the 44th minute Siena's sophomore David Itoafa scored his first goal of the season after he freed himself in the box and put the ball into the back of the net.
Portland came out strong in the second half and it was Escobar who would find the equalizer for the Pilots in the 56th minute. Junior Colby Trah chipped a cross into the box that went over the Siena defender's head and found Escobar, who headed the ball over the keeper and just inside of the left post. This was Escobar's first goal of the season.
That score line would hold for the rest of regulation despite chances for both teams.
The Pilots best second-half opportunity occurred on a pair of shots by Edwardson and Escobar in the 62nd minute, but both shots were saved by Siena goalkeeper Josh Weiss.
In the 83rd minute junior Dustin Munger received a second yellow and Portland would play down a man through the rest of the game.
Siena had a chance late when they earned a corner in the 87th minute, but the header by Siena sophomore Danilo Markovic went just high of the crossbar.
Portland was able to get two shots on goal in the first overtime and the first chance came off of a shot from the top of the box by Escobar in the 97th minute that was saved by Weiss. Senior Derek Boggs sent a header on frame in the 99th minute, but Wiess was once again able to make the save.
Christensen made two critical saves in the 101st and 103rd minutes to keep the match going, but Siena forward Junior Rosero struck a shot from the far wing in the 107th minute that was just out of the reach of Christensen.
Sunday's game against Siena and last Friday's match vs. Duquesne were both part of Oregon State's Hensor/Zaher Classic, and Escobar and Hugo Rhoads were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Pilots are next on the road on Thursday, Sept. 18 in Corvallis, Ore., to face the Oregon State Beavers at 7 p.m.
