PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Cassandra Brown poured in 30 points and Jasmine Wooton scored her 1,000th career point as the Pilots pulled away from the Pepperdine Waves to win 80-61 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Wooton finished with 19 points to become the 24th player in program history to reach the 1,000 career point milestone.
Â
She's also the third player this year to accomplish that feat, joining Brown and Kari Luttinen. This is the first time ever Portland has had three players reach 1,000 career points in the same season.
Â
The Pilots (4-14, 2-5 WCC) led the Waves (6-12, 1-6 WCC) by four at halftime, but it was Pepperdine who claimed a 44-43 lead six minutes into the second half. That's when the Pilots responded with nine straight points to surge back ahead.
Â
The Portland run would stretch to 18-5 as the Pilots seemingly took control of the game. Wooton hit a three-pointer during the outburst and Brown drained a pair from beyond the three three-point arc to help make it a 61-48 game with 9:23 left.
Â
The Waves then briefly climbed back into the game, pulling within seven points with about six minutes remaining. But again the Pilots had an answer, this time by ending the game on a lengthy 17-5 run to pull away.
Â
Portland held the Waves to just one field goal during the final six minutes and the Pilots went a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line down the stretch to secure the win.
Â
Brown is the second Portland player to score 30 points during the past two games after Wooton scored 30 against LMU on Thursday night. Brown also extends her streak of scoring at least 20 points to four straight games.
Â
She was stellar from the field against the Waves, shooting nine of 12 overall and 4-for-6 from three-point range. Brown was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line to improve to 32-for-33 on the season against league opponents.
Â
Wooton also had a solid game shooting, hitting six of 11 from the field overall. She was 1-for-2 on three pointers and went 6-for-6 on free throws.
Â
Portland shot 54.3 percent (25-for-46) as a team, knocked down seven three's out of 15 tries and was 23-for-27 from the charity stripe. Luttinen added 17 points and nine boards, while Cassandra Thompson registered 14 points and nine rebounds.
Â
Luttinen's and Thompson's efforts on the glass helped Portland claim a 34-26 edge in rebounds and Jazmyn Johnson finished with a career-high six assists.
Â
Bria Richardson led the Waves with 22 points and Pepperdine shot 37.5 percent (21-for-56) overall.
Â
The game began with Pepperdine jumping ahead 7-2 before the Portland offense came alive for a 12-2 run. Thompson scored two uncontested lay-ups during the run, courtesy nice feeds from both Johnson and Luttinen. The first half would then remain close before the Pilots took a 34-30 lead into the locker room.
Â
The Pilots next head on the road for WCC games at Pacific and at Saint Mary's next week. First up is a match-up with the Tigers in Stockton, Calif., on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
