THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots remain on the road this week for a pair of West Coast Conference games in the Bay Area.
• The Santa Clara Broncos first host the Pilots for a 7 p.m. contest on Thursday night at the Leavey Center.
• The Pilots then make the short trek north to face the San Francisco Dons at War Memorial Gym on Saturday at 2 p.m.
LAST WEEK • The Pilots dropped their lone contest last week, which was a 79-57 decision at Gonzaga.
• The Bulldogs used a 10-0 run at the end of the first half to claim a 22-point lead at the break before securing the win.
• Cassandra Brown led the way for the Pilots with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Kari Luttinen added 14 points.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Senior Cassandra Brown has scored at least 20 points in two out of the last three games and is averaging 20.7 points against WCC foes; she has a team-best six games this season of at least 20 points and scored a season-high 26 vs. Portland State (12/12).
• Brown is a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line against three conference opponents.
• Both senior Kari Luttinen (1,117) and Brown (1,105) became 1,000 career point scorers earlier this season; Luttinen scored her 1,000th career point during a win against Utah (Nov. 29), while Brown reached the milestone during the win over Portland State (Dec. 12).
• Luttinen now ranks 15th all-time in scoring at UP and both she (10.8 ppg) and Brown (10.3 ppg) are averaging double figures in scoring for their careers.
• Senior teammate Jasmine Wooton (931 points) is also poised to join the 1,000 point club; Portland has never had three players reach 1,000 career points during the same season.
• Wooton had a career-best nine assists against BYU, which was the most assists by a Pilot since ReZina TecleMariam handed out nine assists on Jan. 2, 2012.
• Brown was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament Team (Nov. 28-29) after averaging 14.0 points per game to help the Pilots claim the consolation trophy; during Portland's win over Utah (Nov. 29) she had 20 points and nine boards.
• Brown leads the WCC in three-point shooting (.440, 33-for-75) and free throw percentage (41-for-46, .891), is fourth in three-pointers made and ranks fifth in scoring.
• Head coach Cheryl Sorenson is in her first year at the helm of the UP women's basketball program; Sorenson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Pilots before replacing long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years on The Bluff.
• Wooton was named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Team and the Pilots were tabbed to finish seventh in the preseason coaches' poll.
• Last season Wooton exploded for a career-high 36 points during a 73-65 win at Pacific on Dec. 28; it's the most points scored by a Pilot since Martha Sheldon also scored 36 in 1991.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • The Broncos went 5-4 against non-conference teams before losing four straight to open the WCC slate.
• Senior guard Nici Gilday (18.7 ppg) leads the WCC in scoring and JR Payne is in her first year as head coach of the Broncos.
• The Dons jumped out to a 9-2 start to the season before also opening WCC play at 0-4.
