MALIBU, Calif. --- With the game scoreless and only 15 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Pepperdine's Bri Visalli buried a shot inside the left post to hand the Waves a dramatic 1-0 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game at Tari Frahm Rokus Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
It's Visalli's team-high fourth goal of the year and it came with the match apparently on its way to a second overtime. The ball fell to the sophomore's feet and she did well to stay composed and finish inside the post. Amanda LeCave earns the assist on the game-winner.
Â
Possession was fairly even throughout regulation and into overtime, with both sides creating a handful of scoring opportunities. In the second minute, Portland (6-11-0, 2-5-0 WCC) freshman goalkeeper Rachel Lusby made a nice diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
Â
From there, the Pilots were able to piece together some quality possession, and Jess Kennedy sent a powerful header wide in the 39th minute.
Â
Kennedy's header came on a nice ball sent in by Allison Wetherington, who also delivered a decent ball towards the near post in the half's closing minutes. But Pepperdine (8-6-2, 3-3-0 WCC) goalkeeper Hannah Seabert plucked the ball out of the air before it could find the head of Cecilia Pedersen.
Â
Neither team was able to create much advantage during the second half, but Lusby came through with another diving stop in the 53rd minute. This time it was Pepperdine's Rachael Collins who tried to sneak one past her, but the keeper dove right to deny the shot.
Â
From there both teams pressured the final third of the field, but neither the Pilots or the Waves could connect on that final ball as the game went to extra time.
Â
The Pilots next return home for their final two games of the regular season. First on Saturday, the Gonzaga Bulldogs visit Merlo Field for a WCC match at 4 p.m. The following week San Francisco visits The Bluff.
