MORAGA, Calif. --- Portland's Alyssa Edenstrom scored in the 27th minute and goalkeeper Hanna de Haan made a game-saving stop in the 87th as the Pilots shutout the Saint Mary's Gaels 1-0 on a warm Friday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium. It's the second blank sheet of the season for de Haan and Edenstrom records her first career game-winner.
It came 27 minutes into the game when Portland (5-8-0, 1-2-0 WCC) did well to earn a corner kick. Allison Wetherington took the corner and whipped it in towards the near post. That's where Noelle La Prevotte got a slight touch on the ball to flick it on to Edenstrom, who was able to re-direct it into the left corner of the net. Edenstroms's second goal of the year gave the Pilots a 1-0 lead.
From there the Pilots were solid in possession and denied any attempt by the Gaels (6-6-2, 1-2-0 WCC), holding the home side to just three shots during the first half.
The Pilots continued to defend after the break, while creating a handful of chances on the other end of the pitch. First-half sub Cecilia Pedersen drove a ball towards the frame from about 18 yards out in the 54th minute, but Gaels' goalie Julia McDonald was there to make the stop.
Moments later Pedersen was on the end of a nice ball sent in by Parkes Kendrick, but again McDonald was there to control the header from the freshman.
Portland continued to control possession throughout the second half, but in the game's closing minutes the Gaels pushed numbers forward, searching for the equalizer. And with only three minutes remaining in regulation, Hannah Diaz nearly leveled the score with a shot from point blank range. But there was de Haan, the junior out of Germany, to make the one-handed save, sending the ball safely over the crossbar.
The Gaels failed to capitalize on the ensuing corner, and the Pilots would eventually seal the win.The late save was the only save de Haan was forced to make as the Pilots limited the Gaels to only five shots on the afternoon. The Pilots next make the short trek to Stockton, Calif., for a WCC match against the Pacific Tigers on Sunday. Kickoff at Knoles Field is set for 1 p.m.
