STOCKTON, Calif. --- The Pacific Tigers topped the Portland Pilots 3-0 on Thursday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center. Katie Sullivan recorded four kills and four blocks during the West Coast Conference match.
Pacific (16-11, 7-9 WCC) beat Portland (15-13, 5-11 WCC) with set scores of 25-9, 25-16, and 25-22.
The Tigers jumped out early going on an 8-1 run to open up the first. Pacific maintained momentum through the set and were able to minimize errors to stay ahead of the Pilots. Sullivan and Emily Liger notched a pair of kills trying to gain some Portland momentum, but the Pacific held off the Pilots to win set one.
Morgan Robinson notched a service ace to bring the Pilots within one of the Tigers at 4-3 in the second set. Pacific responded with four points in a row to pull away from Portland. The Pilots stayed with the home side, but were unable to close the gap as the Tigers went on to take the second set.
Portland responded in the third earning a 7-3 lead to start the set. The Tigers worked back to tie the set up at seven, and then the two sides went point-for-point through the middle of the set. The Pilots and Tigers were level at 20 when Pacific used a string of perfectly placed kills to take the lead 23-20. Portland head coach Brent Crouch called a timeout to stifle the opposing side's momentum, and Sullivan came out of the break and hit her fourth kill of the match to bring the score to 23-21. Pacific won two of the next three points to win the set and the match.
The Pilots will drive west to Moraga, Calif. to take on the Saint Mary's Gaels on Saturday at 1 p.m.Â
