BOULDER, Colo. – Portland trailed by three early in the second half, but Colorado used its size and athleticism to pull away for an 85-63 victory Friday night at the Coors Events Center. Sophomore guard D'Marques Tyson scored a team-high 12 points in the loss, all in the first half.
Junior point guard Alec Wintering added nine points and eight assists, while sophomore forward Gabe Taylor also finished with nine points.
Despite 15 first half turnovers, the Pilots (1-2) stayed close behind four three-pointers from Tyson. Sophomore Jason Todd made a 12-footer at the buzzer to make it 42-35 at the half.
Portland scored the first four points of the second half to cut the deficit to three points, but Colorado used a 12-0 run to create separation. Portland would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way, while the Buffaloes would grow the lead to as much as 23 points down the stretch.
The Buffaloes (2-1) gained a 48-29 edge in rebounds and shot 48 percent from the field overall. The Pilots shot 37 percent overall and made 10-of-27 from three-point range. Colorado also had Portland in foul trouble and was able to convert 20-of-29 free throws, while the Pilots finished 9-of-14 overall.
Portland took better care of the ball in the second half with just four turnovers, but the Buffaloes held the Pilots to just 30 percent shooting after the break.
George King paced four Buffaloes in double figures with 18 points, while Josh Fortune added 17 points and 14 rebounds.
The Pilots will continue a rigorous eight-day stretch by returning to the Chiles Center for a pair of upcoming games. Portland hosts Abilene Christian on Sunday at 7 p.m. and then welcomes Alcorn State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The team then travels to the Corpus Christi Coastal Classic to face Colorado State on Friday, Nov. 27. The tourney will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 28 as the Pilots complete a stretch of five games in eight days.
