MISSOULA, Mont. --- The Portland Pilots led by three at the break and Corissa Turley scored a career-high 18 points, but the Montana Lady Griz used a big second half to pull away and claim a 90-67 win at Dahlberg Arena on Sunday afternoon. Ellie Woerner added 11 points for the Pilots, while Rachelle Owens had 10 points and six assists.
Â
The Pilots (1-3) trailed early but embarked on an 11-0 run midway through the second quarter to surge ahead. Down 31-21, Owens sparked the run with a traditional three-point play. Holly Blades followed by drilling a three-pointer, and Ashley Gray contributed a lay-up on a nice feed from Turley to pull the Pilots within one. A pair of Turley free throws later and just like that the Pilots were in the lead.
Â
The two teams would exchange the lead a couple of times from there before Turley hit a jumper to give the Pilots a 41-38 advantage at the half. The 41 points are the most scored by Portland in a half this season, and Turley (16 points) had a career-high in points after the game's first 20 minutes.
Â
The Lady Griz then opened the third quarter with a 14-2 run to jump ahead by nine. Portland cut into the deficit with a jumper from Gray down low and a steal and a fast break lay-up by Kaylie Van Loo, which made it a 56-51 game with 3:04 left in the period.
Â
But Montana responded and carried a 67-53 lead into the fourth quarter, where they outscored the Pilots 23-14 to seal the victory.
Â
Turley was five of eight from the field, went 3-for-5 from behind the three-point arc and was 5-for-6 at the foul line. She helped the Pilots shoot 46.0 percent from the field and 80.0 percent (16-for-20) on free throws.
Â
Owens was 6-for-7 at the line, while Woerner converted her only two attempts and added a three-pointer. Owens registered a career high with her six dimes. Both Gray and Van Loo finished with eight points each, and Gray matched Darian Slaga for the team-high in rebounds with six boards.
Â
Montana's (3-1) Kayleigh Valley had a big night, pouring in a game-high 29 points. She hit 13 of 15 free throw attempts to lead the Lady Griz, who also got double digits in points from Haley Vining (15) and McCalle Feller (13). Alycia Simms led the way on the glass with 11 rebounds.
Â
The Lady Griz shot 46.9 percent overall and won the battle of the boards 39-31. Montana also committed just eight turnovers, while turning 18 Portland miscues into 20 points.
Â
The Pilots next return to the Rose City to battle crosstown rival Portland State on Tuesday night. Tip-off at PSU's Stott Center is set for 7 p.m.
