PORTLAND, Ore. --- The UC Davis Aggies built an early lead before claiming a 72-47 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference women's basketball played on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Ellie Woerner led the Pilots in scoring for the fourth time this season, finishing with 10 points.
Â
The Pilots (2-5) hung around in the first quarter after the Aggies (4-2) opened the game with a three-pointer. Ashely Gray hit a 10-foot jumper and Woerner followed with a three-pointer moments later to pull the Pilots within 7-5 about two and a half minutes in. Portland was still within three when Kaylie Van Loo knocked down a jumper, but the quarter would end with UC Davis leading 24-11.
Â
The UC Davis lead would grow from there, before the Pilots climbed back into the game in the third quarter. Trailing by 19, Hannah Mattson drilled back-to-back three-pointers to spark an 11-1 run for the Pilots. Van Loo then connected on a pull-up jumper from inside the lane, and just like that Portland was within 44-35 halfway through the third.
Â
But the Aggies regrouped and quickly pushed their lead to 20 points en route to the win.
Â
Woerner, a freshman wing out of Sammamish, Wash., has scored in double figures in five of her seven collegiate games. Mattson finished with three three-pointers and nine points, while Corissa Turley chipped in with eight points off the bench. Van Loo collected a career high with six assists, while matching a career-best five rebounds.
Â
Alyson Doherty led three Aggies in double digits with 13 points. UC Davis shot 50 percent overall from the field.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is trip to Seattle, Wash., to face the Washington Huskies on Wednesday night. Tip-off at Alaska Airlines Arena is set for 7 p.m.
