PORTLAND, Ore. --- Junior Corissa Turley scored a team-high 19 points, including a late go-ahead three-pointer, to pace four Pilots in double figures as Portland edged the Warner Pacific Knights 70-67 in an exhibition women's basketball game played on Friday night at the Chiles Center. Turley, a transfer in her first year on The Bluff, was eight of 12 from the field overall and connected on three three-pointers.
Â
Turley's shooting helped the Pilots build a double-digit lead in the second half, but the Knights mounted a comeback as Kendra Preuninger heated up from the field. The guard knocked down six three-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points, and the Knights found themselves leading by six with about two minutes left to play.
Â
That's when the Pilots regrouped and finished the game on a 9-0 run. Turley scored seven of those nine points, which came on a pull-up jumper, a lay-up and a huge corner three-pointer with only 12 seconds showing on the clock.
Â
Now leading by one, the Pilots got a big defensive stop and Kaylie Van Loo ripped down the rebound. Warner Pacific was forced to foul, but Van Loo, a junior, was clutch at the line and hit both free throws to push the lead to three points with only seconds showing on the clock.
Â
Preuninger's desperation three was off the mark at the other end of the floor, and the Pilots came away victorious.
Â
Freshman Ellie Woerner also starred in her debut, scoring 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting in her first collegiate game. Junior transfer Rachelle Owens added 10 points, to go along with seven assists, and sophomore post Ashley Gray chipped in with 10 points and a team-high seven boards. Van Loo matched Owens with a team-best seven assists.
Â
Turley came to UP after two years at the College of the Sequoias, and Owens ventured to the Rose City after a two-year stint at College of Southern Idaho. Junior guard Holly Blades, another transfer from College of Southern Idaho, just missed scoring in double figures with eight points.
Â
The game was the first that featured new rules implemented by the NCAA during the offseason. The most note-worthy of these rule changes was switching the women's game from two 20-minute halves to four 10-minute quarters.
Â
The Pilots next open the regular season against the Willamette Bearcats on Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Chiles Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
