PORTLAND, Ore. --- Allison Wetherington scored the game-winner in the 53rd minute and the Pilots were solid on defense all night long as Portland ended the 2015 regular season with a 1-0 win over the San Francisco Dons on a wet Saturday at Merlo Field. The Dons entered the night with a chance to claim their first ever conference title, but the Pilots played the role of the spoiler with the shutout win.
Â
The first half was played fairly evenly as both team had decent chances. San Francisco's (13-4-3, 7-2-0 WCC) Sydnie Telson hit the post with a low shot through traffic in the 15th minute, which came only minutes after Portland (8-11-0, 4-5-0 WCC) senior Noelle La Prevotte had a well-struck shot saved.
Â
Portland's Cecilia Pedersen and Parkes Kendrick also had quality shots in the first half, but Pedersen's header was high in the 31st minute and Kendrick dragged one just wide of the right post in the 33rd minute.
Â
Then eight minutes into the second half, Wetherington and Kendrick connected for the game's only goal. Wetherington played a through ball to Kendrick, who sent a first-touch pass back to Wetherington, right in front of the goal mouth. The junior midfielder did the rest, first controlling the ball with her left foot before poking a shot under USF keeper Madalyn Schiffel.
Â
The goal is Wetherington's third of the year, while Kendrick records her third assist.
Â
The Dons then spent the rest of the second half racing time in search of the equalizer. But the Pilots defense came through, and junior goalkeeper Hanna de Haan made seven saves to preserve the blank sheet.
Â
De Haan's most crucial stop came in the 70th minute when a long ball was played into the box to San Francisco's Tiara Webb. Webb took a stellar touch before driving a shot towards the right post. That's where de Haan denied the point-blank shot to keep the game 1-0.
Â
It's de Haan's third shutout of the year and the Pilots allowed only six goals total in nine conference games.
Â
The night was the final appearance at Merlo Field for Portland's two seniors, La Prevotte and Haylee DeGrood. DeGrood, a center back, played a role in 20 shutouts during her career, while La Prevotte finishes with 11 goals and nine assists.
