THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots travel to Seattle, Wash., this week to face the Washington Huskies on Wednesday night before returning home to host the Boise State Broncos on Sunday.
• Tip-off for the Pilots and Huskies at Alaska Airlines Arena is set for 7 p.m.
• Sunday's game with the Broncos at the Chiles Center will begin at 2 p.m. and the non-conference tilt will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet NW, which is channel 737 in the Portland market.
LAST WEEK • Last Friday, the Pilots had a chance to tie or win the game in the closing seconds, but the Weber State Wildcats escaped the Chiles Center with a 57-55 win.
• Ashley Gray, Holly Blades and Kaylie Van Loo combined to score five straight points for the Pilots in the final 90 seconds to tie the game, and Portland forced two key Wildcat turnovers.
• Weber State's Regina Okoye then scored the go-ahead lay-up with four seconds remaining, and the Wildcats defense prevented the Pilots from getting off a shot as time expired.
• Gray and Ellie Woerner led the Pilots with 11 points and six rebounds each.
• Woerner again led the Pilots in scoring on Sunday with 10 points against UC Davis, but the Aggies blew open a close game in the second half to win 72-47.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • The Pilots are second in the West Coast Conference in three-point percentage (.380).
• Individually, junior guard Hannah Mattson leads the WCC in three-point percentage (.538), junior point guard Kaylie Van Loo is fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (.564), and freshman Ellie Woerner (.455) and junior forward Corissa Turley (.824) are sixth in three-point percentage and free throw percentage, respectively.
• The new-look Pilots feature six newcomers to go along with six returners in head coach Cheryl Sorenson's second year at the helm of the program.
• Junior transfer guards Holly Blades and Rachelle Owens both came to The Bluff from the College of Southern Idaho, while guard Corissa Turley previously attended College of the Sequoias.
• Completing the newcomers are three freshmen, two of which hail from the Pacific Northwest; post Julie Spencer is originally from Chehalis, Wash., while guard Ellie Woerner calls Sammamish, Wash., home; Darian Slaga is from Prescott Valley, Ariz.
• Woerner leads the team in scoring (11.4 ppg), rebounding (4.4 rpg) and three pointers made (10).
• Headlining Portland's six returners are junior guards Hannah Mattson and Kaylie Van Loo; both Mattson and Van Loo appeared in all 30 games last year, with each making eight starts.
• Sophomore posts Ashley Gray and Sara Zaragoza also return after promising freshman campaigns; Gray is shooting 64.5 percent from the field and she is tied with Woerner for the team-high in rebounds with a 4.4 per game mark.
• During the summer, Zaragoza helped Spain claim the gold medal the 2015 U20 FIFA European Championships.
• Cheryl Sorenson is in her second season as head coach of the Pilots after assuming the role last year after long-time coach Jim Sollars' retirement.
• Sorenson spent her first three years on The Bluff as an assistant coach.
• The Pilots lost three 1,000-point scorers to graduation; Cassandra Brown (1,396 points), Kari Luttinen (1,366 points) and Jasmine Wooton (1,130 points) all reached that historic milestone last year, becoming the first Pilot trio to do so in the same season.
• Brown captivated the nation last year when she won the 2015 State Farm Three-Point Championship (men's and women's) on ESPN, which was part of Final Four Weekend in Indianapolis, Ind.; Brown defeated Dayton's Andrea Hoover in the women's final before conquering Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos, who was the men's champion.
• The Pilots were picked to finish 10th in the WCC this season.
• Portland has been to four NCAA Tournaments (1994-97), two WNIT's (1998 & 2009) and one WBI (2010).
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • Washington (5-1) junior guard Kelsey Plum (28.0 ppg) leads the nation in scoring; junior post Chantel Osahor (10.0 rpg) is the team's top rebounder.
• The Huskies as a team are averaging 85.4 points, while UW opponents are scoring just 61.2 points.
• Mike Neighbors is in his third season as head coach and he led the Huskies to the NCAA Tourney last year; UW is currently receiving votes in the coaches' poll.
• Boise State enters Thursday night's game vs. Washington State with a 3-2 record.
• Junior guard Brooke Pahukoa (14.0 ppg) leads three Broncos averaging double figures in points; Boise State opponents are scoring just 54.8 points per contest.
• Gordy Presnell is in his 11th year at the helm of the Broncos and Boise State reached the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
