PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior point guard Alec Wintering scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Portland Pilots to a 65-60 victory over the Cal State Fullerton Titans at the Far West Classic Saturday night at the Moda Center. Senior guard Bryce Pressley added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Pilots.
Despite shooting just 36 percent from the field for the night, the Pilots (6-7) were able come away with the win. Portland forced 16 turnovers and scored nine more points from the free throw line than the Titans (6-5).
Wintering added six rebounds, seven assists and two steals in 36 productive minutes.
Khalil Ahmad scored a game-high 25 points for the Titans, while Tre' Coggins added 17 points. Jamar Akoh pulled down 18 rebounds for Fullerton.
Portland never trailed in the second half, but a few missed free throws late allowed Fullerton a chance to get back into the game. The Titans had a chance to tie the game with 30 seconds remaining, but Malcolm Brooks three-point attempt rimmed off and Wintering found a streaking Pressley for a transition layup to take a 62-57 lead.
Pilot freshman Jazz Johnson made 3-of-4 free throws in the closing seconds to secure the win.
Fullerton edged the Pilots on the boards with a 41-39 rebounding margin, but the Pilots countered with an 18-9 advantage in points off of turnovers.
The Titans finished at 39 percent from the field, but made just 9-of-21 free throws. The Pilots were 18-of-26 from the foul line.
Portland will have a very short turnaround before opening West Coast Conference play on Monday night. The Pilots will host Loyola Marymount for a 6 p.m. tip-off and then welcome Pepperdine on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Both games will have free admission for kids (6th grade and younger), as well as 2-for-1 adult pricing.
