PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland junior Alec Wintering scored a season-high 26 points and dished out eight assists, but the Boise State Broncos held on for an 81-71 victory Saturday night at the Chiles Center.
Senior Bryce Pressley added 11 points and seven rebounds and freshman guard Jazz Johnson chipped in 11 points off the bench for the Pilots (4-5).
Senior guard Anthony Drmic had a team-high 24 points to lead four Broncos (5-4) in double figures.
Portland came out firing against a Boise State squad coming off a NCAA Tournament appearance last season. The Pilots shot out to 17-7 lead capped by seven straight points from Wintering.
Boise State responded and was able to carry a 43-40 advantage into halftime.
The Broncos would push the lead to 12 points at 60-48 on a Nick Duncan three-pointer with 12:06 remaining, but the Pilots roared back with a 19-7 run to tie the game at 67-67. Johnson and Wintering combined for all but two of the points as the Chiles Center crowd came to life.
Boise State was again able to answer the run as Portland endured a three-minute, 47-second scoreless streak over the final four minutes of regulation before a pair of late free throws. The Broncos converted 12-of-14 free throws in the final 3:52 to secure the victory.
Portland held Boise State to 42 percent shooting from the field and 29 percent from three-point range, but the Broncos converted 21-of-28 free throws on the night. Portland made five more field goals than Boise State (30-25) and shot 44 percent from the field.
The Pilots, who entered the contest top five nationally in three-pointers made and top 25 in three-point percentage, finished just 6-of-22 from beyond the arc. Portland outscored Boise State 42-30 in the paint.
Duncan finished with 16 points for the Broncos, while Mike Thompson and Lonnie Jackson added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Portland will return to the Chiles Center to host the Idaho State Bengals on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. The game will be aired live on TheW.tv and radio coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland. Tickets start at $10 for adults and $5 for children.
NOTES: Portland recognized longtime voice of the Pilots Bill Johnson with a pregame recognition and moment of silence before tip-off. Johnson, who spent 23 years calling Pilot basketball, unexpectedly passed away on Sunday. A memorial service has yet to be scheduled.
