THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots play their final two games of the regular season this week when they travel to Brigham Young and San Diego for a pair of West Coast Conference contests.
• First the Pilots will be in Provo, Utah, for a 6 p.m. (Pacific) game against the BYU Cougars at the Marriott Center.
• Portland then travels to San Diego, Calif., to face the San Diego Toreros at the Jenny Craig Pavilion at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
LAST WEEK • The Pilots nearly pulled off a pair of upsets last week at the Chiles Center, but the Pacific Tigers (80-78) and Saint Mary's Gaels (62-58) both held on to win.
• Against the Tigers on Thursday, the Pilots trailed by 10 at the half before a second-half run put them in front by six; after Pacific had reclaimed the lead the Pilots had two chances to either tie or win the game in the closing seconds, both a three-pointer and a jumper from the lane were both off the mark.
• Jasmine Wooton led the Pilots with 18 points and six rebounds against Pacific, and the Pilots scored a season-high 52 points in the second half.
• Saturday's game followed a similar script with the Gaels holding on down the stretch with free throws and key offensive rebounds; Cassandra Brown scored 21 points.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • The Pilots have lost their last four games by a combined 14 points.
• Senior Cassandra Brown is having a remarkable year and ranks 19th nationally in both three-point percentage (.426) and free throw percentage (.872); she scored a season-best 30 points during a win over LMU (Jan. 15) and she notched a double-double (23 pts, 10 rebs) at Pacific (Jan. 22).
• Brown (1,343), Kari Luttinen (1,320) and Jasmine Wooton (1,094) have each become 1,000 career point scorers this season, with Wooton accomplishing the feat most recently against Pepperdine (Jan. 17); Luttinen scored her 1,000th career point during a win against Utah (Nov. 29), while Brown reached the milestone during the win over Portland State (Dec. 12).
• This the first time in program history to have three players reach 1,000 career points during the same season, and all three reached the milestone during a win.
• Wooton had a career-best nine assists against BYU (Dec. 29), which was the most assists by a Pilot since ReZina TecleMariam handed out nine dimes on Jan. 2, 2012.
• Brown was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament Team (Nov. 28-29) after averaging 14.0 points per game to help the Pilots claim the consolation trophy; during Portland's win over Utah (Nov. 29) she had 20 points and nine boards.
• Brown is second in the WCC in three-point percentage (.426) and is fourth in scoring (17.8 ppg); Luttinen is ninth in scoring (14.0 ppg).
• Portland as a team leads the league and is 18th in the country in three-point percentage (.365); in WCC games the Pilots are tops in free throw percentage (.773)
• Head coach Cheryl Sorenson is in her first year at the helm of the UP women's basketball program; Sorenson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Pilots before replacing long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years on The Bluff.
• Wooton was named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Team.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • The Cougars have lost three straight games; junior guard Lexi Eaton leads the WCC in scoring (21.2 ppg) and senior forward Morgan Bailey is averaging a double-double (18.1 ppg, 10.7 rpg).
• San Diego is one of three teams currently tied for second in the WCC; junior forward Malina Hood (15.4 ppg) leads three Toreros scoring in double figures, while senior forward Sophia Ederaine is nearly averaging a double-double (12.5 ppg, 9.8 rpg).
