THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots host a pair of West Coast Conference games this week as the San Francisco Dons and Santa Clara Broncos visit the Chiles Center.
• First the Pilots will face the Dons on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
• The Broncos then come to The Bluff on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
• Saturday is UP's annual Play 4Kay game and all fans wearing pink to the game will get in for free.
LAST WEEK • Portland gave the Gonzaga Bulldogs all they could handle at the Chiles Center last Saturday, but the Zags would pull away for an 85-63 win, courtesy a late 20-3 run.
• Seniors Cassandra Brown, Kari Luttinen and Jasmine Wooton each had 14 points during the loss, while Brown and Cassandra Thompson each had a team-high seven rebounds.
• The Pilots out-rebounded the Bulldogs 36-32, but Gonzaga out-shot Portland 55.2 percent to 38.3 percent.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Senior Cassandra Brown is having a remarkable year and is averaging 20.5 points per game against WCC opponents; she scored a season-best 30 points during a win over LMU (Jan. 15) and she notched her first double-double (23 pts, 10 rebs) of the year at Pacific (Jan. 22).
• Brown currently ranks 14th in the country in free throw percentage (74-for-83, .892) and is 25th nationally in three-point percentage (53-for-124, .427).
• Portland as a team is 12th in the country in three-point percentage (.378) and is 25th in free throw percentage (.745).
• Brown (1,248), Kari Luttinen (1,225) and Jasmine Wooton (1,034) have each become 1,000 career point scorers this season, with Wooton accomplishing the feat most recently against Pepperdine (Jan .17); Luttinen scored her 1,000th career point during a win against Utah (Nov. 29), while Brown reached the milestone during the win over Portland State (Dec. 12).
• Portland has never had three players reach 1,000 career points during the same season, and all three reached the milestone during a win.
• Wooton had a career-best nine assists against BYU (Dec. 29), which was the most assists by a Pilot since ReZina TecleMariam handed out nine assists on Jan. 2, 2012.
• Brown was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament Team (Nov. 28-29) after averaging 14.0 points per game to help the Pilots claim the consolation trophy; during Portland's win over Utah (Nov. 29) she had 20 points and nine boards.
• Brown is second in the WCC in free throw percentage (.892), is third in three-pointers made (53) and three-point percentage (.427) and is fourth in scoring (18.3 ppg); Luttinen is second three-point percentage (37-for-86, .430).
• In WCC games, Luttinen is first in three-point percentage (22-for-45, .489), while Brown is first in three-pointers made (27) and second in scoring (20.5 ppg).
• Head coach Cheryl Sorenson is in her first year at the helm of the UP women's basketball program; Sorenson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Pilots before replacing long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years on The Bluff.
• Wooton was named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Team and the Pilots were tabbed to finish seventh in the preseason coaches' poll.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • Junior forward Taylor Proctor is USF's leading scorer (15.4 ppg) and rebounder (8.2 rpg) and is one of three Dons averaging double figures in points.
• Jennifer Azzi is in her fifth year as head coach of the Dons, who defeated the Pilots 85-68 earlier this season at War Memorial Gym.
• Santa Clara senior guard Nici Gilday ranks second in the conference in scoring with an 18.7 points per game mark.
• The Broncos topped Portland 83-68 at the Leavey Center on Jan. 8 and Santa Clara is led by first-year head coach JR Payne.
