PORTLAND, Ore. --- The San Francisco Dons jumped out to a big lead early against the Portland Pilots before cruising to a 79-44 win in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Thursday night at the Chiles Center. Kari Luttinen led the way offensively for the Pilots with 13 points.
Â
But offense was hard to come by for Portland (4-28, 2-9 WCC), who trailed 21-4 eight minutes into the game. The Dons' (14-9, 5-7 WCC) lead would grow from there before UP's Cassandra Brown knocked down a three-pointer from the angle while getting fouled. She'd cap the rare four-point play to pull the Pilots within 34-14 with 6:21 left in the first half.
Â
The Pilots were then able to climb within 18 points briefly after Brown connected on a jumper, but the Dons answered with a three-pointer by Kalyn Simon to make it a 45-24 game at the break.
Â
The second half began much like the first as San Francisco stretched the lead to 30 points, and the Pilots never seriously threatened the Dons from there.
Â
The Pilots shot just 29.1 percent (16-for-55) on the night, while the Dons combined to shoot 55.2 percent (32-for-58). Portland was five of 19 from three-point range and went 7-for-9 at the free throw line. USF was 6-for-11 on three's and shot 9-for-11 on foul shots.
Â
The Dons controlled the paint and out-rebounded the Pilots 42-26, while claiming a 44-16 edge in points down low. USF's Taylor Proctor was the game's high scorer with 17 points.
Â
The Pilots next welcome the Santa Clara Broncos to the Chiles Center for a WCC contest on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and it's Portland's annual Play 4Kay game, which means all fans wearing pink will receive free admission.
