PORTLAND, Ore. --- After the Pilots had tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the UC Davis Aggies scored a pair in the top of the 10th before holding on for a 7-5 win over Portland in the series finale of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots did bring the potential game-tying run to the plate in the 10th after Eric Sapp singled with one out, but Zach Stone recorded the next two batters to seal the win.
Â
In that seventh, the Pilots (3-11) strung together five consecutive singles after a ground-out to begin the inning. Kevin Farley's single brought home Michael Lucarelli to make it a one-run game, and Cody Lenahan tied it with when he drilled a line-drive base hit to center, which scored Dan Whittaker and evened the score 5-5.
Â
Lenahan's liner also loaded the bases, giving the Pilots a couple of chances to do some more damage. And after Brady Kerr struck out, it appeared that Sapp had done just that when he turned on a pitch and pulled a deep fly down the right field line. But the ball drifted just foul before leaving the ballpark, and Max Cordy would eventually strike out Sapp to end the inning.
Â
Both teams would go scoreless from there before the Aggies (8-4-1) scored two in the 10th on two hits. Pinch hitter Mason Novak's RBI single with one out and runners on second and third proved to be the difference. Izaak Silva also scored when Kevin Barker followed Novak with a well-placed sacrifice bunt.
Â
Davis Tominaga (1-2) started the game at first base for the Pilots, but the sophomore righty takes the loss after throwing 5.0 innings in relief of Billy Sahlinger. Tominaga allowed four runs on four hits and Sahlinger surrendered three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings.
Â
Cordy (3-0) worked 2.2 innings of reliever and gets the win, while Stone pitched the bottom of the 10th to earn his third save of the year. Starter Raul Jacobson lasted into the seventh inning, but he yielded five runs on 10 hits.
Â
It looked good early for the Pilots, who scored three runs during the first two innings. In the first, Farley had an RBI double and Lenahan claimed a run-scoring single to give Portland a 2-0 lead. The score was 3-0 an inning later when Wade smacked an RBI double down the left field line.
Â
But the Aggies scored two in the third to pull within one and surged into the lead with a three-run sixth. Spencer Henderson had the big hit of the inning when he left the yard with a two-run homer to right-center field.
Â
The Pilots out-hit the Aggies 15-12 and both teams left multiple runners on base. Portland stranded 11, while UC Davis left 10 on the base paths.
Â
Both Farley and Lucarelli had three hits to lead Portland.
Â
The Pilots next head back on the road to face the Seattle Redhawks in Bellevue, Wash., on Tuesday. First pitch at Bannerwood Park is set for 4 p.m.
