MORAGA, Calif. --- Portland freshman Geoffrey Lee belted his first collegiate home run, but the Saint Mary's Gaels jumped ahead of the Pilots early en route to a 7-1 win at Louis Guisto Field on Sunday. The win allows the Gaels to claim the three-game West Coast Conference series.
Â
The Pilot (5-21, 1-5 WCC) fell into an early hole as the first three SMC (15-8, 4-2 WCC) batters in the bottom of the first inning reached base via a walk. After new Portland pitcher Ryan Barr entered the game and fanned the first batter he faced, Logan Steinberg brought home the game's first run with an infield single.
Â
Zach Kirtley followed with his own run-scoring infield single before Collin Ferguson trotted home on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 game.
Â
After the Gaels added a run in the bottom of the fourth, Lee led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field. His blast briefly pulled the Pilots within three runs.
Â
But Saint Mary's had an answer with a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the seventh before cruising to the win. The run in the fifth came on consecutive one-out doubles by Steinberg and Kirtley and one of the two runs in the seventh scored on a Portland throwing error. Jackson Thoreson was responsible for the game's final run with an RBI single.
Â
Kevin Wade continued his recent surge at the plate with a pair of hits for the Pilots, while Cody Lenahan also had two hits. Wade is riding a five-game hitting streak and he went 6-for-10 during the weekend with three RBI's. Lenahan is five for his last eight with two doubles.
Â
Portland starter Jordan Horak (0-2) takes the loss, while Gaels' starter Johnny York (4-1) notches his fourth win of the year. York allowed just one run on six hits in 6.0 innings and Billy Oxford registered the save after tossing 3.0 scoreless innings.
Â
Barr worked 6.0 innings of relief, yielding just two runs, one earned, on six hits. He struck out four and Jake Hawken threw the final 2.0 innings.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a three-game league series with the Pepperdine Waves next weekend. The opener is set for 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field, while first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
