PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon State collected 18 hits en route to a 14-2 win over the Portland Pilots in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Beavers scored at least one run in each of the first four innings and now improve to 9-3 on the season. The Pilots fall to 4-12 overall.
Oregon State freshman right-hander Sam Tweedt (2-0) picked up the win after tossing six innings and allowing just one run on four hits and striking out six. Cole Doherty (0-2) took the loss for the Pilots after surrendering six runs (five earned) in 1.2 innings of work.
Kyle Nobach went 4-for-5 and scored three runs to lead six Beavers with multi-hit games. Jeff Hendrix finished 3-for-4 with a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs.
Gabe Clark and Joe Gillette also went yard for the Beavers.
Portland designated hitter Kevin Wade drilled his first home run of the season in the fourth inning to get the Pilots on the board. Portland's second run came in the eighth inning when pinch hitter Jason Rosen doubled and later scored on an error.
It was all OSU early as the Beavers scored one in the first and added five more in the second inning highlighted by a three-run homer from Hendrix.
Gillette's two-run homer to left center in the third made it 8-0 and Hendrix led off the fourth with a single and later scored on Nobach's sacrifice fly for the 9-0 lead.
Three OSU relievers combined for the final three innings, allowing just two hits, a walk and an unearned run.
Portland totaled six hits for the afternoon. Freshman Geoffrey Lee and senior Turner Gill extended their hitting streaks to nine and seven games, respectively.
The Pilots will now prepare for a seven-game road trip that begins this weekend in Tucson, Ariz. against the Arizona Wildcats. The three-game weekend series starts Friday at 5 p.m. Portland will then visit Oregon State on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., before opening West Coast Conference play at San Diego on March 13-15.
