PROVO, Utah --- Portland's Kevin Wade had two doubles and two RBI's, starter Kurt Yinger went 8.0 solid innings on the mound and reliever Carl Snaring navigated out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth as the Pilots topped the Brigham Young Cougars 6-3 on Friday night at Ralph H. Miller Park. The win sets up the rubber match of the three-game series, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Â
Yinger (1-5) was in vintage form as he nearly went the distance. The senior scattered eight hits, struck out four and yielded only three runs. He did run into a bit of trouble in the ninth when the Cougars (13-17, 5-6 WCC) loaded the bases with no outs and the Pilots leading 6-2.
Â
But that's when Snaring came in to retire three straight batters to earn his second straight save. He induced two fly outs to the outfield, the second of which allowed a runner to score from third, and he sealed the win by fanning pinch hitter Dallen Reber. Snaring, a redshirt-sophomore lefty, entered the week with no career saves but is quickly emerging as a viable late-inning option for the Pilots.
Â
Meanwhile Wade and the Portland (7-25, 2-9 WCC) offense came through with some timely runs. The Pilots scored the game's first two runs in the top of the second inning, courtesy a BYU error and an RBI ground-out by Eric Sapp.
Â
The Cougars briefly tied it with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Pilots responded with three doubles and three runs in the fifth to reclaim the lead. Wade tallied the first double of the inning, which was a shot to left field that scored Grant Taylor. Cody Lenahan and Kevin Farley each followed with an RBI double of their own as the Pilots jumped ahead 5-2.
Â
The score remained that way until Wade provided some insurance with another RBI double in the top of the ninth. Again Wade went to left field with a hard-hit ball and Taylor easily scored from third.
Â
BYU starter Jeff Barker (1-3) threw 4.2 innings and reliever Brady Corless worked the final 4.1 innings. Barker allowed four runs on six hits and four walks, while Corless was charged with a run on four hits.
Â
The Pilots out-hit the Cougars 10-8 and BYU committed the game's only two errors.
