PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Turner Gill belted his seventh home run of the year and the Pilots led the Ducks for much of the afternoon, but Oregon pulled away late to claim an 11-3 win on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Gill now ranks second in the West Coast Conference in homers.
Â
His blast came with a runner on in the bottom of the first after the Ducks (19-15) had jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the frame. Grant Taylor had reached on a single, and Gill crushed a ball deep over the wall in right-center field.
Â
An inning later the Pilots (7-27) took a 3-2 lead after Taylor drove in a run with a ground-out.
Â
The lead would stand as Portland starter Jordan Wilcox did well to settle down after Oregon's two-run first inning. He kept the Duck bats off balance as the Pilots took their one-run lead to the sixth inning.
Â
But that's where the Ducks scored three to re-claim the lead and chase Wilcox. Phil Craig-St. Louis and Brandon Cuddy tied it with a pair of doubles, the go-ahead run scored on a fielder's choice and Matt Eureste made it a 5-3 game with an RBI single.
Â
Oregon's offensive surge continued the next inning with four more runs, three coming on a three-run homer by Josh Graham. The Ducks added two more insurance runs in the ninth.
Â
Wilcox (1-4) is saddled with the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked just one in 5.1 innings. Three relievers followed Wilcox on the mound.
Â
Oregon middle inning reliever Cooper Stiles (1-1) picks up the win by pitching 4.0 scoreless innings. He held the Pilots to just one hit, fanned three and didn't issue a walk. The Ducks also used four pitchers on the day.
Â
Oregon finished with 15 hits and the Pilots committed the game's only two errors.
Â
The Pilots next travel to Bellevue, Wash., on Wednesday to face the Seattle Redhawks. First pitch at Bannerwood Park is scheduled for 4 p.m.
