STOCKTON, Calif. --- Portland starter Cole Doherty was stellar on the mound, Carl Snaring was solid in relief and Ryan Barr and Travis Pederson provided the RBI's as the Pilots ended the season with a 2-0 win over the Pacific Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Klein Family Field. The win allows the Pilots to claim the three-game West Coast Conference series over the host Tigers.
Â
Doherty (2-5) was masterful in 6.0 innings, holding the Tigers (14-37, 10-17 WCC) to just four hits. The junior lefty struck out two before giving way to the Pilot pen, which did enough to finish off the shutout.
Â
Alex Fisher pitched an inning-and-two-thirds and Snaring retired all four batters he faced for his third save of the year. Fisher escaped a runners on second and third with one out situation in the bottom of the seventh, and Snaring ended a jam in the eighth after entering the game with two on and two out.
Â
Meanwhile the Portland (12-42, 7-20 WCC) offensive provided what proved to be just enough runs. Barr went 3-for-4 and he drove in the Pilots first run in the top of the third inning. With Brian Pozos on second base, Barr sent an RBI single to right field to give Portland a 1-0 lead.
Â
The margin would remain one run until Turner Gill doubled to begin the top of the ninth inning. He moved to third on a ground out before Pederson came through with a key sacrifice fly to center field, which allowed Gill to easily trot home with an insurance run.
Â
The double gives Gill 56 for his career and he'll enter the Portland record books as No. 2 all-time in that category. He fell just one double shy of matching Brad Clem's all-time record of 57 career two-baggers.
Â
The Pilots out-hit the Tigers 7-5 and Pacific's Michael Bensen (2-5) takes the loss. He yielded one run on five hits, while striking out four. Cory Pophom pitched an inning of relief and Mike Hager allowed one run on two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
