PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Cody Lenahan homered in the bottom of the eighth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Seattle Redhawks jumped ahead early and held on for a 7-2 win over the Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on Wednesday at Joe Etzel Field. Lenahan's homer is his second of the year and it came with a runner on base.
Â
But Seattle (24-23) had previously scored seven unanswered runs, including a three-run first inning, which proved to be too much for the Pilots (10-36) to overcome. In that first inning, Griffin Andreychuk led off the game with a solo home run and Brock Carpenter drove in two with a single up the middle.
Â
Seattle's Landon Cray added an RBI single in the top of the second before Carpenter hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, handing the Redhawks a cozy 7-0 lead.
Â
Starting pitcher Ted Hammond (5-3) did the rest, holding the Pilots to just three hits in 6.0 innings of work. He struck out five and walked two.
Â
Portland tried to mount a rally in the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out, but Seattle reliever Kyle Doyle entered the game to end the inning and the threat with back-to-back strikeouts.
Â
Lenahan did get to Doyle the next inning when he drilled a long fly ball to deep center field that hit the top of the wall before going over the fence. Turner Gill was on second base and the homer pulled the Pilots within five.
Â
But that's as close as they'd get as reliever Ryan Freitas didn't allow a base runner during the final inning and two-thirds.
Â
Portland starter Kurt Yinger (2-8) takes the loss, and he was followed by five pitchers out of the bullpen. Alex Fisher had his second straight solid outing, pitching 3.0 scoreless and hitless innings.
Â
The Pilots next turn their attention back to the West Coast Conference as the Santa Clara Broncos visit for a three-game series this weekend. Friday's opener is set for 2 p.m. and it will be preceded by an official blessing of the new turf field at Joe Etzel Field at 1:30 p.m.
Â
First pitch on both Saturday and Sunday is set for 1 p.m. and Portland will honor its seniors before the finale on Sunday, which will be the Pilots' last home game of the year.
