PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots controlled possession for much of the night and out-shot the Oregon Ducks, but in the end the two teams played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition women's soccer match played on Friday night at Merlo Field. The Pilots claimed a 12-6 edge in shots, and senior Noelle La Prevotte led the way with three attempts.
Â
La Prevotte's best chance came in the 65th minute when she hit a shot from inside the 18-yard box that was high of the crossbar. The Pilots continued to pressure the Oregon frame after that, and in the 82nd minute, junior Parkes Kendrick was somehow able to turn with a defender on her back and unleash a shot towards the left post. But UO goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir was there to make the save.
Â
Portland's final chance came on a nice set-up by La Prevotte and Kendrick, but again the shot was high, this time off the foot of Ariel Viera in the 89th minute.
Â
The Pilots did well defensively to limit Oregon's chances, and goalkeepers Hanna de Haan and Rachel Lusby combined for the shutout. De Haan earned All-WCC Honorable Mention as a sophomore last season, while Lusby is a freshman seeing her first action on the Merlo Field pitch.
Â
Portland controlled the run of play during the first 45 minutes as well and the Pilots easily had the best scoring opportunities. Sophomore Hannah Griffiths Boston had a header saved in the 24th minute, and Maddie Dieker tried to slot one inside the left post in the 36th minute. Oregon's first half keeper Lauren Holder made the save on Dieker's shot.
Â
The Pilots next host the Oregon State Beavers in the season opener next Friday night at Merlo Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
