PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots' comeback fell just short in the Chiles Center on Saturday afternoon as the visiting #23 Pacific Tigers won 3-1. Three Pilots—Emily liger, Sarah Savoca, and Hannah Troutman—led Portland offensively with 12 kills each.
Pacific (10-3, 1-1 WCC) topped Portland (11-3, 1-1 WCC) with set scores of 25-21, 25-21, 16-25, and 25-23.
The Tigers used an early three point run to create a gap over the Pilots. Portland held with Pacific and got within three points on multiple occasions throughout the set thanks to key kills by Brittney Markwith, Liger, and Troutman. Pilots made a late four point run to put the Tigers on their heels at 23-20, but the visitors from Stockton closed out the first set to take the match lead 1-0.
The second set started off with a battle with eight tie scores and four lead changes. Portland took their first lead of the set at 7-6 off of a kill by Troutman, but Pacific came back to take the lead. 5-7 setter Djurdjina Milovic had a big play at the net that ended in a Pilot point to tie the set at nine. The Pilots gained the lead again at 14-13 after a cross court kill by Savoca and a Tiger error, which sent the visiting side on a five point run to gain momentum. The Pilots were unable to recover as Pacific went on to take their second set in a row.
Portland responded in the third taking the advantage right out of the gate on a Makayla Lindburg and Savoca block and a Milovic service ace. The Pilots never lost the lead during the set as eight blocks helped navigate them to the set win and force a fourth set. Liger led Portland with nine kills through the first three sets while Markwith and Savoca contributed eight of their own.
The fourth set resembled the second with 14 tied scores and 4 lead changes. Blocking continued to prove vital to the Pilot success with four during the set, with a big block coming from Savoca and Lindburg to tie the set at 10. Pacific held the slim advantage through the middle of the set, but Tiger errors kept the Pilots in it and the two sides were even at 20. Troutman had a pair of smart kills late, but the Tigers held off the home side to win the set and match.
The Pilots will head to the Bay Area next week to take on Santa Clara on Thursday and San Francisco on Saturday.
