PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Diego Toreros defeated the Portland Pilots by an 82-71 margin in a West Coast Conference men's basketball game Thursday night at the Chiles Center.
San Diego senior guard Duda Sanadze scored a game-high 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field for the Toreros (6-10, 1-4 WCC). Senior center Jito Kok added 17 points and seven rebounds.
Portland junior point guard Alec Wintering finished with a team-high 23 points, including 12-of-12 from the free throw line. Senior guard Bryce Pressley added 20 points, six rebounds and four steals.
The Pilots (8-11, 2-4) have now lost four straight games after starting conference play with a home sweep of LMU and Pepperdine. The Toreros snapped their four-game losing skid with Thursday's win.
San Diego shot a season-high 60 percent from the field for the game and outrebounded the Pilots by a 38-25 margin.
Portland forced 18 turnovers and committed just nine on the night, but was only able to gain a 17-15 advantage in points off of turnovers. The Pilots shot 38 percent from the field, but struggled to 4-of-20 shooting from three-point range.
Portland looked to be in control early with a 15-5 lead on a Jazz Johnson runner in the lane. San Diego responded with an 18-2 run highlighted by eight straight points from Sanadze. The Toreros would carry the momentum into a 35-28 halftime lead.
Pressley's jumper cut the deficit to 37-34 early in the second half, but back-to-back three-pointers from Cameron Neubauer and Sanadze pushed the margin to 47-34. The Toreros would grow the lead to as much as 16 points and maintained a double-digit margin for a majority of the half.
Johnson added 11 points off the bench for the Pilots, while Vasa Pusica finished with 13 points and six assists for San Diego.
Portland will have a quick turnaround and welcome an upstart BYU Cougars team coming off of a 69-68 win at No. 25 Gonzaga Thursday night. The Cougars (13-5, 4-1) have moved into a tie for first place in the league standings in the loss column with Gonzaga and Saint Mary's.
Portland will welcome back members of the 1996 men's basketball team, the last Pilot squad to make the NCAA Tournament. As part of the 20-year celebration, the team will be recognized during the first half of Saturday's game.
