THIS WEEK • The Pilots begin their second swing through the West Coast Conference this week when they head to the Bay Area for games against the San Francisco Dons and Santa Clara Broncos.
• First is a 7 p.m. game with the Dons at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco, Calif., on Thursday night.
• Then on Saturday the Pilots make the short trek south to Santa Clara for a 2 p.m. tilt with the Broncos.
LAST WEEK • Freshman Ellie Woerner erupted in the fourth quarter to finish with 15 points and the Pilots nearly came all the way back from 19 points down, but the Pacific Tigers held on for a 72-64 win on Thursday night at the Chiles Center.
• Woerner extended her streak of scoring in double figures to nine straight games, while sophomore Ashley Gray chipped in with 13 points.
• Freshman Darian Slaga led the Pilots with 10 points on Saturday, but the Saint Mary's Gaels overcame a first-half deficit to prevail 78-51.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Freshman wing Ellie Woerner is off to an impressive start to her collegiate career; she leads the team and ranks 10th in the WCC in scoring with a 12.3 points per game mark, which is second among all freshman in the conference.
• Woerner has scored in double digits in nine of the last 10 games and she's reached double figures during 16 of her 20 career games, which includes a career-high 19 points in her collegiate debut vs. Willamette (Nov. 14).
• She grabbed a career-best nine boards at Pepperdine (Dec. 23), matching a season-high for the Pilots.
• Woerner is one of six newcomers for the Pilots, to go along with six returners.
• Junior transfer guards Holly Blades and Rachelle Owens both came to The Bluff from the College of Southern Idaho, while forward Corissa Turley previously attended College of the Sequoias.
• Blades is tops on the team and sixth in the conference with 35 three-pointers, while Turley leads the team in free throw percentage (.833).
• Junior guard Kaylie Van Loo is fourth in the WCC in assists (3.9 apg) and assists/turnover ratio (1.5).
• Sophomore forward Ashley Gray is shooting 53.8 percent from the field and is tops on the team in rebounds with a 4.2 per game mark; she has scored a career-high 16 points in two of the last five games.
• During the summer, sophomore center Sara Zaragoza helped Spain claim the gold medal the 2015 U-20 FIFA European Championships.
• Cheryl Sorenson is in her second season as head coach of the Pilots after assuming the role last year after long-time coach Jim Sollars' retirement; she spent her first three years on The Bluff as an assistant coach.
• The Pilots lost three 1,000-point scorers to graduation; Cassandra Brown (1,396 points), Kari Luttinen (1,366 points) and Jasmine Wooton (1,130 points) all reached that historic milestone last year, becoming the first Pilot trio to do so in the same season.
• Brown captivated the nation last year when she won the 2015 State Farm Three-Point Championship (men's and women's) on ESPN, which was part of Final Four Weekend in Indianapolis, Ind.
• Portland has been to four NCAA Tournaments (1994-97), two WNIT's (1998 & 2009) and one WBI (2010).
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • The Dons have won two of their last three and sit at 12-8 overall and 3-6 in the WCC.
• USF features two 1,000-point scorers in Taylor Proctor (19.0 ppg, 8.8 rpg) and Zhane Dikes (14.6 ppg), who rank third and seventh in the league in scoring, respectively.
• Hall of famer and Olympic gold medalist Jennifer Azzi is in her sixth year as head coach at USF.
• The Broncos have won three straight, posted a 12-game winning streak earlier this season and are 15-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
• Santa Clara features a balanced scoring attack, led by Lori Parkinson at 11.8 points per game, and is holding the opposition to just 57.5 percent shooting.
• JR Payne is in her second year as head coach at Santa Clara.
