PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland sophomore guard D'Marques Tyson continued his hot shooting by drilling eight three-pointers and finishing with a career-high 27 points, but San Francisco controlled the game in an 87-76 victory Thursday night at the Chiles Center.
San Francisco (11-9, 5-5 West Coast Conference) had six players score in double figures, led by 19 points from Ronnie Boyce. Don't'e Reynolds added a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Tyson, who made his first career start Thursday night, eclipsed his previous career-high of 25 points scored last season against Valparaiso. He made 8-of-17 three-pointers in the game and added four rebounds and two blocked shots.
Portland junior point guard Alec Wintering, who was recognized pregame for scoring his 1,000th career point last weekend, added 24 points, seven assists and three steals.
Sophomore center Philipp Hartwich also earned his first career start in place of Ray Barreno, who sat out with a concussion.
The Dons complete the regular season sweep over the Pilots (9-14, 3-7) after earlier defeating Portland by a 107-95 margin in San Francisco.
San Francisco jumped out to an early double-digit lead that grew to 18 points late in the first half. The Dons at one point made eight consecutive field goals, including a pair of three-pointers from Boyce, to create separation.
The Pilots battled back in the second half and three times were able to cut the deficit to five points. Each time the Dons converted a three-point play on the ensuing possession to keep their distance. Tyson's putback and free throw made it 79-74 with 1:56 remaining, but Uche Ofoegbu drove baseline and converted the and-1 to push the margin back to eight with 1:31 remaining. Portland's next two possessions ended with turnovers as USF iced the game at the foul line.
San Francisco shot 48 percent from the field, finished 9-of-21 from three-point range and 22-of-26 at the foul line. Portland shot just 36 percent overall, was 13-of-34 from beyond the arc and 13-of-18 at the stripe.
The Pilots outrebounded USF by a 38-37 margin, but the Dons had a 38-22 scoring edge in the paint.
Both coaching staffs took part in this week's Coaches vs. Cancer Sneaker and Suits initiative to raise awareness for the American Cancer Society. Portland coaches will be in sneakers again on Saturday as well as recognize the founder of The Bravery Project PDX, Kara Larson, who was diagnosed with cancer last spring. Larson will present the game ball and raise funds and cancer awareness by selling scarves in the main lobby. Visit www.braverypdx.wordpress.com or follow @Bravery_PDX on Twitter for more information.
Portland will look to bounce back Saturday night when the Santa Clara Broncos (7-15, 3-7) visit for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The game will be broadcast live on CampusInsiders.com, while radio coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland.
