PORTLAND, Ore. --- Two days after picking one of the most historic wins in program history, the Portland Pilots were overcome by the No. 5 San Diego Toreros in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. The Toreros claimed the West Coast Conference match by scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-14.
Â
The first went to the Toreros (17-2, 8-0), who surged ahead after the two teams exchanged points to begin the afternoon. The Pilots (11-9, 4-4 WCC) lead 3-1 early after a kill from Hannah Troutman. Moments later the Pilots still led by one at 6-5, but that's when the Toreros embarked on an 8-0 run to take control of the game. Portland tried to climb back into it with more kills from Troutman, but in the end the Toreros would hold on for a 10-point win.
Â
The Pilots responded in the second set, again jumping out to an early lead. Troutman registered two more kills, and Reghan Pukis added a kill to help Portland claim a 7-5 advantage. The Pilots' lead would remain at two points for most of the match, which was helped by kills from Katie Sullivan, who recorded four kills during set number two. Troutman added five kills, but the Toreros recovered to take a late 19-18 lead. Sullivan and Sarah Savoca then posted back-to-back kills to give the lead back to the home team. San Diego would then score five of the final eight points of the set to take an overall lead of 2-0.
Â
The Toreros then sealed the win in the third set as the visitors jumped ahead early and never looked back.
Â
Sullivan was solid in the final set as well as she matched Troutman for the team-high with 10 kills. Freshman setter Cali Thompson had 28 assists on the afternoon, and both teams finished with six blocks.
Â
Lisa Kramer led the Toreros with a match-high 13 kills.
Â
The loss comes after the Pilots defeated the No. 11 BYU Cougars in five sets on Thursday night. The Cougars were the highest ranked opponent Portland's ever defeated, and it's the program's first win ever over BYU.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a road trip to Spokane, Wash., next weekend to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The two Northwest rivals are set to square off on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Martin Center.
