SPOKANE, Wash. ---- Just when it appeared the game was heading to overtime for Portland and Gonzaga, the head referee pointed to the spot, and senior Allison Wetherington did the rest as the Pilots stunned the Bulldogs with a 2-1 win on Saturday night at Luger Field. The penalty came with only seven seconds remaining in regulation.
And it was set up when the Pilots (7-3-3, 1-1-1 WCC) played a long ball forward that somehow found the feet of Kimberly Hazlett. The freshman then quickly headed for the GU (4-6-2, 0-3-0 WCC) goal, setting up a 1-v-1 with the keeper, Sarah Swanson. But once inside the 18-yard box, Hazlett was taken down from behind, and a foul was called on the home side.
Wetherington then stepped to the spot and found the back of the net to give the Pilots the road win. It's the second game-winner on the year for Wetherington.
The Pilots nearly broke the tie several times in the second half, but first Swanson made a nice diving save on a free kick from Wetherington in the 78th minute. Moments later, Swanson came through again with another diving stop near post, this time on a shot from Ellie Boon.
Meanwhile at the other end of the field, Portland goalkeeper Hanna de Haan made a pair of clutch saves to keep the score tied.
In the first half it was Kaycie Young who gave the visiting side an early 1-0 lead with her first career goal in the 11th minute. Hazlett sent in the initial ball, which Swanson couldn't corral. Hannah Griffiths Boston was there for a shot, which was saved by Swanson. But the rebound ended up at the feet of Young, and she found the back of the net with a composed finish.
The Zags would even the match about 10 minutes later when Callie Best recorded her first goal of the year. Karley Baggerly sent a pass into the box to find Best, who slotted a shot into the right corner of the net.
The Pilots would nearly reclaim the lead twice before the halftime buzzer. Griffiths Boston hit shot wide on a nice pass from Lucy Davidson in the 32nd minute. Hazlett then rattled the cross bar when she tried to chip the keeper from 25 yards out in the 41st minute.
The Pilots next head to Provo, Utah, for a match with the BYU Cougars next Saturday. Kickoff at South Field is set for 6 p.m. (Pacific).
