PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Hannah Troutman recorded 13 kills and Reghan Pukis added 12 as the Pilots cruised to a three-set sweep over the Pacific Tigers at the Chiles Center on Saturday afternoon. The Pilots rolled with set scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-20, and the win allows Portland to remain tied for third place in the West Coast Conference.
Â
The Pilots improve to 17-12 overall and to 10-7 in the WCC, giving the program their most wins in a season since 1986. Portland's 10 conference wins are also the most league victories in a season since 1985, when the Pilots still competed at the NAIA level.
Â
The sweep is also Portland's first win ever over Pacific.
Â
The Pilots led from start-to-finish against the Tigers (14-15, 8-9 WCC), which included jumping ahead early in the first set. Kills from Troutman, Katie Sullivan and Cali Thompson helped the home team take a 15-8 lead, and Monica Gajda followed with an ace moments later. Pukis and Sarah Savoca responded to Pacific's comeback bid with two more kills, making it 20-15. Portland then put together a string of kills to claim the set 25-20.
Â
Portland again took an early lead in the second set, forcing the Tigers to try to mount another comeback. The Tigers did make a short run, but Pukis and Savoca both registered kills to help the Pilots maintain their lead. Portland battled through the last few points with kills from Troutman, Pukis, and Sullivan to win 25-19.
Â
The two teams exchanged points to begin the third set, as Troutman, Pukis, and Savoca each connected for kills. Then with Pacific leading by one, the Pilots went on a four-point run to take back the lead. Lexi Elman followed with two kills and an ace to bring the Tigers within two, but Markwith and Sullivan combined for a block to stop their run. Morgan Robinson continued the momentum for the Pilots with an ace, followed by two kills from Markwith and a block with Troutman to seal the win.
Â
Troutman didn't commit a single attacking error as the Pilots only had three errors overall as a team. Gajda had 17 digs to lead Portland, while Thompson had 36 assists. Troutman just missed a double-double with nine digs.
Â
The Pilots will next be back in action at home on Monday night at 5 p.m. for senior night and their last conference match of the season against Gonzaga.
