FULLERTON, Calif. – Portland senior point guard Alec Wintering scored 31 points and dished out eight assists, but the Dayton Flyers got off to a quick start and held on for an 84-74 victory Friday on day two of the Wooden Legacy hosted at Titan Gym.
The Pilots (3-2) will get Saturday off before concluding play at the Wooden Legacy on Sunday at 8 p.m. versus Cal State Northridge at the Honda Center. That game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU.
Wintering made 15-of-16 free throws and added five rebounds and three steals. He logged all 40 minutes of playing time, as did backcourt mate Jazz Johnson and forward Gabe Taylor, who each finished with 17 points.
The Flyers (3-2), who have gone to the NCAA Tournament each of the last three seasons, had a more balanced attack with five players reaching double figures, led by Charles Cooke with 20 points and Scoochie Smith with 17 points and seven assists.
Portland got off to a slow start and trailed by 17 points midway through the first half, but behind the strong guard play of Wintering and Johnson were able to spark a 15-5 run to whittle the margin down to 38-31 at the half.
Wintering opened the second half with back-to-back layups to make it a three-point game, but Dayton rallied once again with a 13-3 run capped by a pair of Cooke baskets to push the margin back to 13 points.
The Pilots fought back on a Wintering layup followed by a steal and two free throws to make it a 56-50 with 8:16 left, but the Flyers scored on their next three possessions capped by a Xeyrius Williams three-pointer to get the cushion back to double-digits where it remained until the final buzzer.
Portland outrebounded Dayton by a 34-27 margin, but the Flyers shot 55 percent from the field compared to the Pilots' 40 percent overall. Portland made 23-of-24 free throws on the night, but committed 18 turnovers that led to a 25-18 margin for Dayton in points off of turnovers.
