PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland sophomore Darian Slaga scored a career-high 24 points against No. 15 Washington, but the Huskies prevailed 83-53 over the Pilots on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Slaga overcomes her previous best of 19 points, which she recorded late last season.
Portland (1-5) limited the Huskies, who are one of the top scoring teams in the nation, to close to 25 percent shooting for most of the first half, while offensively the Pilots did well to remain within reach. Midway through the second period, Slaga drained a deep three-pointer, her first of the game. Senior Hannah Mattson then followed with a pair of free throws to cut the Washington lead down to 25-15 with about four minutes left in the half.
Natalie Romeo responded by burying a three-pointer to end a three-minute long scoring drought for the Huskies. Moments later Kelsey Plum added a baseline jumper and a three of her own as UW recovered to take a sizeable lead at the break.
Portland continued to play solid defense in the third quarter and Slaga carried on her hot shooting. She buried a three and mixed in a couple of jumpers as the Pilots tried to climb back into the game.
But the Huskies answered Slaga by heating up from the field, and the visitors' lead would soon swell with the help of two more three-pointers from Romeo. Washington's advantage grew in the fourth quarter as Plum started knocking down shots, and the Huskies claimed the road win.
Slaga was an efficient 7-for-12 from the field, and she went four of seven from beyond the three-point arc. Sophomore Julie Spencer added eight points and six rebounds, while junior Ashley Gray corralled a team-high eight boards.
Plum entered the afternoon leading the nation in scoring with a 30.5 per game mark, and she led the way for UW (6-1) with 26 points. Romeo chipped in with 21 points, and Chantel Osahor, the country's top rebounder, pulled down 17 boards.
The Huskies were Portland's third opponent from the Pac-12 conference in their past four games.
The Pilots next remain at home when they host crosstown rival Portland State on Wednesday night. Tip-off for the Pilots and Vikings at the Chiles Center is set for 7 p.m.
