SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- After Portland had taken a one-goal lead, the San Diego Toreros scored twice in the final 10 minutes to stun the Pilots with a 3-2 comeback win in the West Coast Conference women's soccer finale on Friday night at Torero Stadium. Freshmen Larkin Russell and Kimberly Hazlett scored Portland's two goals, while sophomore Kaycie Young claimed two assists.
Â
After the Pilots fell behind in the first half, Russell had the emphatic answer when she buried a tremendous goal into the left corner of the net from 22 yards out in the 43rd minute. Freshman Brianna Miyama set up the goal with a pass towards the top of the box, and Russell unleashed a shot that the USD keeper Amber Michel never had a chance at.
Â
It's the third goal of the year for Russell, and Miyama picks up her second assist. Young also earned an assist on the equalizer.
Â
With the game still 1-1 early in the second half, Hazlett was in the right place and the right time to produce the go-ahead goal. Young sent a ball in from left of the box, and it found the feet of Hazlett, who stayed composed to finish and give the visiting side a 2-1 lead. It's Hazlett's second goal of the year.
Â
But the Toreros had a response, first with the equalizer in the 80th minute. It came when Jacquelin Altschuld scored an impressive goal on a free kick from 25 yards out, leveling the score 2-2. And then in the 88th minute, Julia Sherwood provided the game-winner, courtesy a brilliant ball sent in by Atlschuld. Altschuld whipped in a cross towards the UP frame, and Sherwood elevated and headed it in from six yards out, handing the Toreros the dramatic win.
Â
USD's first goal came on a counter after a Portland corner kick. Rachel Conners' pass created a break-away for her teammate Summer Mason, and Mason did the rest, giving the home team a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.
Â
Portland ends the regular season at 9-7-3 overall and 3-5-1 in the WCC, while San Diego moves to 10-8-1 and 5-4-1 in the league.
