BOISE, Idaho --- Portland's Darian Slaga scored 18 points and Ashley Gray collected 12 rebounds, but the Boise State Broncos pulled away late in the fourth quarter to claim a 74-60 win over the Pilots on Sunday afternoon at Taco Bell Arena. The 12 boards are a career-high for Gray.
The game was close throughout the afternoon before the Broncos (9-1) pushed their lead to 17 points mid-way through the final frame. That's when the Pilots (2-9) embarked on a 10-0 run to climb back into the game. Slaga buried a three during the run, and she went coast-to-coast with a lay-up after making a steal on defense. Moments later Holly Blades drilled a deep three, and just like that the Pilots were within 62-55 with 3:08 remaining.
Shalen Shaw then answered Blades' three with a three of her own to give a 10-point lead back to Boise State, and the Broncos would hold on for the win.
Corissa Turley added 12 points for the Pilots, who shot 32 percent overall, connected on five three-pointers and went 13 of 17 at the free throw line. Gray's efforts on the glass helped Portland out-rebound the Broncos 43-37
"I was proud of our effort to keep fighting and answer Boise State's runs with our own," Portland head coach Cheryl Sorenson said following the game. "We have to be better at executing for 40 minutes. We had mental lapses that punished us at times. We had a great effort on the glass, especially Ashley coming up with 12 for the game, and Corissa was aggressive and made some great plays at the rim. We're now hoping to get some mental and physical rest before we start conference play."
BSU's Riley Lupfer led all scorers with 19 points, and the Broncos shot 41 percent from the floor. The Broncos combined for 10 three's and were 16-for-20 at the charity stripe.
The Broncos tried to pull away early, but the Pilots hung around for much of the first half. After falling behind by 11 to begin the game, the Pilots came storming back with a 9-0 run. Hannah Mattson sparked the outburst with a three-pointer, and Slaga made it a two-point game with a nifty move down the lane.
Boise State again tried to create separation in the second quarter, but again Portland responded, this time with a lay-up from Kate Andersen and a three-point play by Gray, who ripped down an offensive rebound and got fouled on the put-back. She'd hit the ensuing free throw to pull the Pilots within seven, but the Broncos claimed a 37-26 lead at the break.
Portland out-scored the Broncos 19-14 in the third period to make it a six-point game heading into the final frame.
The Pilots next take a break for the holiday and return to the court to open play in the West Coast Conference on Dec. 29 when they host the Pacific Tigers at the Chiles Center.
