PORTLAND, Ore. – Calaen Robinson hit a late three-pointer and the Portland State Vikings held on for a 77-75 victory over the Portland Pilots in an intense city rivalry game before 2,679 fans Tuesday night at the Chiles Center.
The Pilots (7-4) overcame a 13-point deficit to take the lead late, but the Vikings (6-4) converted last in a game that featured numerous clutch plays.
Portland junior forward Gabe Taylor, the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Week, recorded a game-high 22 points including two late baskets in crunch time. Senior point guard Alec Wintering battled through early foul trouble to finish with 18 points and Jazz Johnson added 15.
Six Vikings reached double figures led by 15 points from De'Sean Parsons and 12 points and 11 rebounds by Bryce Canda.
The Pilots used a 10-0 run sparked by a pair of Taylor baskets to take a 67-65 lead with 4:25 remaining to energize the home crowd. Parsons tied it on the next possession, but Taylor buried a three-pointer to give the Pilots a 70-67 edge. Parsons and Taylor traded layups before Zach Gengler tied the game at 72 with a three-pointer and 2:10 left in regulation.
Portland had two chances to take the lead, but missed a pair of perimeter jumpers which led to Robinson's three-pointer with 21 seconds left. The Pilots turned the ball over with 11 ticks on the clock and then were forced to foul. Portland had just three team fouls and eventually forced Gengler to the line with 4.3 seconds left for a one-and-one. He calmly hit both to ice the game and Wintering beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to cap the scoring.
The Vikings build a double-digit lead off of a fast start and lots of first half energy. Portland State shot 53 percent in the first half and outrebounded the Pilots by a 23-12 margin in the opening period. The Pilots were dealt a big blow when Wintering, the WCC's leading scorer at nearly 22 points per game, picked up his third foul with 7:54 left in the first half and was forced to the bench for the remainder of the period. PSU was able to take a 42-33 lead into halftime.
Portland stormed back out of the locker room and shot a blistering 68 percent from the field in the second half and got a big boost from freshman center Joseph Smoyer. The Portland native played the game's final 18 minutes and had four points, three rebounds and two blocked shots. He also assisted on Taylor's last basket that gave the Pilots their final lead.
Portland shot 52 percent from the field for the game, while the Vikings finished at 48 percent overall. PSU had a 37-26 rebounding margin and 20-12 edge in second chance pointes.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak to the Pilots for Portland State. The last Vikings win came at the Chiles Center against the then-No. 25 ranked Pilots by an 86-82 margin on Dec. 2, 2009.
The Pilots will conclude the non-conference schedule with their fourth game in eight days on Thursday at Cal State Fullerton. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Titan Gym. Portland opens WCC play at Pacific on Thursday, Dec. 29 and their league home-opener is Saturday, Dec. 31 at 5 p.m.
