PORTLAND, Ore. – Gabe Taylor had a tip-in with 2.4 seconds left in double overtime to give the Portland Pilots a thrilling 90-89 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley Monday night at the Chiles Center. The Pilots trailed in the closing seconds of regulation, overtime and double overtime, but came through with clutch baskets in each sequence to pull out the win.
The Pilots (5-3) trailed by 13 points with 6:53 left in regulation and were down 70-60 with just over three minutes remaining, but mounted a furious rally late.
Senior point guard Alec Wintering went the length of the court and dished off to freshman center Joseph Smoyer for the game-tying dunk with 0.8 seconds left to force the first overtime.
The teams traded leads throughout the first overtime period, but the Pilots were down two in the closing seconds when sophomore guard Jazz Johnson made a spinning layup in traffic with less five ticks on the clock to push it to double OT.
A layup by UTRGV's Nick Dixon gave the visitors an 89-88 lead with 22 seconds left. Wintering again drove to the basket and forced the help defender over. He missed, but Taylor was there for the put-back and a desperation heave from UTRGV fell short as the Pilots pulled off the improbable comeback.
Wintering set a school single-game record by playing all 50 minutes. He finished with 24 points, a career-high nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals.
Junior D'Marques Tyson made his first start of the season and drilled seven three-pointers to finish with a season-high 21 points. Johnson added 19 points, six rebounds and five assists in 47 minutes of court action. Taylor rallied for 16 points and seven rebounds.
Smoyer was a difference maker in his first extended minutes against Division I competition. He logged 28 total minutes, including the final 13:28 of regulation all 10 minutes of overtime. He finished with eight points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
Portland struggled offensively from the outset and were uncharacteristically erratic from the free throw line. The Pilots entered the game No. 2 nationally by shooting 85 percent as a team. Portland finished the game 23-of-41 overall and made just 7-of-24 three-pointers.
UTRGV (2-8) was led by Antonio Green with 28 points and seven rebounds, while Nick Dixon added 22 points and nine boards.
The Pilots will next hit the road for a tough matchup with the Boise State Broncos on Saturday at 1 p.m. (PT). Portland will then return home for finals week before taking on South Dakota on Friday, Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Moda Center. The Pilots will then meet Oregon State on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. at Moda Center. Tickets for those games are available at
