DAVIS, Calif. --- After the Portland Pilots won the first three games of the four-game series, the UC Davis Aggies salvaged a win by prevailing 4-3 in the finale played on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. Trailing by a run, the Aggies scored the tying run in the bottom of the fifth and the go-ahead run in the sixth en route to the win.
Â
The Aggies (1-3) previously took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Portland (3-1) starting pitcher Jordan Horak. Ryan Anderson drove in one of the runs with a sacrifice fly, and Mark Cardinalli claimed the other RBI with a single.
Â
But as has been the case all weekend, the Pilots battled back and took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. Grant Taylor led off the frame with a double, and Caleb Whalen followed with a double of his own to give the Pilots their first run, cutting the deficit in half. Whalen then moved to third on a ground out before trotting home with the tying run, courtesy a single off the bat of Ryan Barr.
The Aggies then hurt themselves with a couple of errors, which eventually let Kevin Wade to score, giving the Pilots a 3-2 lead.
Â
Portland's lead would stand until the fifth, when the Aggies manufactured a run to notch the score at 3-3. An inning later UC Davis pushed another run across, this time taking the lead for good.
Â
The Pilots did get the potential tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the Aggies held on for the win.
Reliever Blake Peters (1-0) earns the win for the Aggies after working 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He limited the Pilots to just two hits. Starter Nat Hamby pitched the first 5.2 innings and was charged with all three Portland runs.
Â
Horak lasted 4.0 innings, and reliever Cole Doherty (0-1) takes the loss for the Pilots. Doherty yielded one unearned run on just one hit in 2.0 innings. Alex Fisher tossed the final 2.0 innings, striking out two and allowing only one batter to reach base.
Â
The Pilots out-hit the Aggies 7-5 and Barr went 2-for-3 on the day. Cody Hawken also had a pair of hits for Portland.
Â
The Pilots next come home after opening the Geoff Loomis era with three convincing wins on the road. Coach Loomis, who is in his first year at the helm of the Pilots, is a former Portland baseball standout and is a member of the UP Athletics Hall of Fame.
Â
Portland is scheduled to play the first night game ever at Joe Etzel Field on Friday night when the Oakland Golden Grizzlies come to The Bluff for a 6 p.m. game.
Â
UP added lights to the 28-year-old facility during the off-season, which followed the instillation of artificial turf the previous year. The upgrades are part of a three-phase, long-term renovation plan to Portland's home ballpark.
