THIS WEEK • The Pilots conclude the regular season this week with a pair of West Coast Conference home games at the Chiles Center.
• First the Pilots will host the No. 22 Brigham Young Cougars on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in Portland's annual Play4Kay game; fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game to support breast cancer awareness, and those wearing pink will receive free admission.
• Saturday brings a visit by the San Diego Toreros for a 2 p.m. game, which will be broadcast live in the Portland area on Comcast SportsNet NW (Ch. 737).
• Saturday will also be senior day, and the Pilots will honor Sara Ines Hernandez with a pre-game ceremony.
SOLO LOBO • Saturday is senior day on The Bluff and the Pilots will honor their lone true senior on the roster, Sara Ines Hernandez, with a pre-game ceremony.
• Hernandez, who unfortunately has missed this season due to an injury, has appeared in 39 career games.
• The native of Rome, Italy, has scored 31 career points and corralled 33 career rebounds.
• She has four three-pointers total and she once scored a career-best nine points, on 4-for-6 shooting, with a career-high five boards at Boise State (Dec. 21, 2014).
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Freshman wing Ellie Woerner is enjoying a stellar beginning to her collegiate career; she leads the team and ranks 12th in the WCC in scoring with a 12.3 points per game mark, which is third among all freshmen in the conference.
• Woerner has scored in double digits during 20 of her 25 career games, which includes a career-high 19 points against both Willamette and San Francisco, and she's led the team in scoring 18 times.
• She grabbed a career-best nine boards at Pepperdine (Dec. 23), matching a season-high for the Pilots.
• Woerner is one of six newcomers for the Pilots, to go along with six returners.
• Junior transfer guards Holly Blades and Rachelle Owens both came to The Bluff from the College of Southern Idaho, while forward Corissa Turley previously attended College of the Sequoias.
• Blades is tops on the team and eighth in the conference with 45 three-pointers, while Turley unfortunately missed several games with an injury.
• Junior guard Kaylie Van Loo is fifth in the WCC in assists (3.8) and assists/turnover ratio (1.5); in WCC contests, she's averaging 4.3 assists a game.
• Sophomore forward Ashley Gray is shooting 51.4 percent from the field and is tops on the team in rebounds with a 4.1 per game mark; she has scored a career-high 16 points twice.
• During the summer, sophomore center Sara Zaragoza helped Spain claim the gold medal the 2015 U-20 FIFA European Championships.
• Cheryl Sorenson is in her second season as head coach of the Pilots after assuming the role last year after long-time coach Jim Sollars' retirement; she spent her first three years on The Bluff as an assistant coach.
• The Pilots lost three 1,000-point scorers to graduation; Cassandra Brown (1,396 points), Kari Luttinen (1,366 points) and Jasmine Wooton (1,130 points) all reached that historic milestone last year, becoming the first Pilot trio to do so in the same season.
• Brown captivated the nation last year when she won the 2015 State Farm Three-Point Championship (men's and women's) on ESPN, which was part of Final Four Weekend in Indianapolis, Ind.
• Portland has been to four NCAA Tournaments (1994-97), two WNIT's (1998 & 2009) and one WBI (2010).
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • BYU is ranked No. 22 in the coaches poll and has won 15 straight games.
• Senior guard Lexi Eaton Rydalch (24.6 ppg) leads the WCC and is tied for fourth in the nation in scoring; junior Kalani Purcell (11.6 ppg, 12.7 rpg, 4.9 apg) is tops in the league in rebounding and assists.
• Head coach Jeff Judkins is in his 13th year at the helm of the Cougars and BYU has posted five straight 20-win seasons.
• San Diego enters the weekend on a three-game losing streak.
• Malina Hood (18.2 ppg) is tied for third in the conference in scoring, while her sister Maya Hood (14.1 ppg, 9.3 rpg) is second in rebounding.
• Cindy Fisher is in her 11th season as head coach of the Toreros and she's led San Diego to an unprecedented five straight 20-win seasons.
