PROVO, Utah – The BYU Cougars erupted for a 21-point halftime lead and then cruised to a 99-81 victory over the Portland Pilots in West Coast Conference basketball action Thursday night at the Marriott Center. BYU is still in contention for a share of the WCC title heading into the final day of conference play on Saturday.
Kyle Collinsworth recorded a triple-double for the Cougars (22-8, 13-4 WCC) with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 16 assists to lead six players in double figures. Senior guard Chase Fischer finished with a game-high 21 points.
Portland junior center Ray Barreno recorded his first career double-double, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Jazz Johnson added 17 points, all in the second half, to lead the Pilots. Senior guard Bryce Pressley added 15 points.
The Pilots (12-18, 6-11) would ride Johnson's hot hand in the second half and cut the margin to 14 points on a Bryce Pressley jumper with 9:57 remaining in regulation, but the Cougars responded with consecutive three-pointers from Zac Seljaas and Portland would get no closer.
BYU finished the game shooting 52 percent overall and made 11-of-30 three-pointers. The Cougars also gained a 46-26 edge in points in the paint and 20-13 margin in points off of turnovers. BYU dished out 30 total assists on 36 made baskets.
Portland shot 45 percent in the game and drilled 11-of-26 three-pointers in the game. Leading scorer Alec Wintering, who was averaging 19 per game, struggled and finished with just five points on 1-of-10 shooting. In the Pilots win over BYU in Portland earlier this season, Wintering scored a game-high 22 points.
The Pilots are guaranteed at least the No. 7 seed in the upcoming WCC Tournament and will move into the No. 6 seed with a win at San Diego on Saturday along with a Santa Clara home loss to Pacific. Portland and San Diego are scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off on Saturday in a game televised on ROOT Sports Northwest. Radio coverage begins at 5:30 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
