Women's Schedule/Results SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's track & field teams concluded action at the MPSF Championship on Saturday afternoon. Multiple Pilots set PRs and school records during the final day of indoor competition and Reid Buchanan earned a spot at Nationals.
Buchanan set a PR in the 3,000m with a time of 7:52.66. He was the third runner across the line in his heat and finished third overall. His time is the 16th fastest time in the 3,000m in the nation which qualifies him for the NCAA Indoor National Championship in Birmingham, Ala. on March 11-12.
"We got a lot of PRs which is what you are hoping for in this meet," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "We got some impressive performances across the board. Reid came here knowing his indoor career was on the line and he got it done big time. I couldn't be happier for him and it was great his parents were out to see it." On the women's side, freshman Dani Castillo won her section of the 400m dash with a PR of 59.13 and Christina Francisco also set a PR with a time of 59.49. Taryn Rawlings placed third in her section and 15
th overall with her 800m time of 2:11.35. In her first race at the NCAA level, Parkes Kendrick took the top spot in her section with a 3,000m 9:38.47 and finished 21
st overall.
The women's 4x400m team of Hannah Souders, Madison Leek, Maria Montt, and Taryn Rawlings set a program record with a time of 3:54.14.
Section three of the men's 800m featured four Pilots. Cobie Chavez-Killinger was the top finisher completing the race in 1:52.63 taking second in the section and 13
th overall. His time was not only a two second PR, but also set a new school record. In the shorter distances, Jack Welch was 22
nd overall in the men's 400m dash with his time of 49.62.
"Great competitive effort by the 800m boys and girls sprinters," said assistant coach Chad Colwell. "Really performed well in the championship setting. Great signs for us moving towards the outdoor season."
This concludes indoor team action for the Pilots. Portland will begin the outdoor season on March 5 at the Willamette Open.
